We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Cohen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sydney, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My perspective on work-life balance has completely changed over the past few years. Earlier in my career, I thought balance meant keeping work and personal life completely separate. Now, I see that it’s more about alignment and sustainability. There are seasons where work requires more of your attention and seasons where personal priorities come first.

For me, balance means creating space for all the parts of my life that matter. As someone who is pursuing a music career while also running my own social media business, I’ve learned that creativity doesn’t thrive when you’re constantly operating in one lane. I need time to write music, create, spend time with the people I love, and invest in my professional goals.

I’ve also learned that balance isn’t about achieving a perfect 50/50 split. It’s about being intentional with your time and energy so that your passions, relationships, and well-being can all grow together. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s making sure no meaningful part of your life is consistently put on hold.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey definitely hasn’t been a straight line, and it certainly hasn’t been easy.

Music has always been a huge part of who I am. I grew up performing and spent years training in musical theatre, but like many people, I eventually felt pressure to pursue the “safe” path. After college, I accepted a corporate job that looked right on paper, yet deep down, I felt unfulfilled and unsure of where I was headed.

Everything changed when I decided to take a leap of faith and audition for American Idol. That experience reminded me of something I had always known but had forgotten: the things that light you up are usually worth pursuing. It reignited my love for music and gave me the confidence to start releasing original songs and fully invest in my creative side. At the same time, I discovered a passion for storytelling through social media and realized that creativity could take many forms.

Today, I run my own social media management business while continuing to pursue music professionally. Balancing entrepreneurship, artistry, relationships, and personal growth at a young age has come with plenty of uncertainty, financial risk, and moments of self-doubt. But every challenge has reinforced one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned: trust your intuition. The more I’ve listened to it, the more it has led me toward opportunities that align with who I am.

What sets me apart is that I’m not afraid to pursue more than one passion. I believe we’re allowed to be multifaceted. I can be a business owner, a marketer, and an artist all at once. I’m most proud that I had the courage to step away from a path that no longer felt right and create one that does.

If there’s one thing I want people to take away from my story, it’s that you don’t need to have everything figured out. Take the risks, follow what excites you, and trust your heart. You only get one life, and it’s too short to spend it doing something that leaves you unfulfilled.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting for a week, I’d want to give them the full Orange County experience because I think what makes this place so special is the lifestyle and variety.

Most mornings would start with an early reformer or Lagree class at one of the many incredible studios in the area. Then, we’d grab breakfast burritos and coffee from either Hola Adios or Kit Coffee and head down to 42nd Street Beach in Newport Beach. There’s nothing better than moving your body and then spending a slow morning by the ocean, and I think it’s the perfect way to experience the laid-back side of Orange County.

During the week, we’d spend plenty of time exploring Newport Beach. We’d take a Duffy ride around Newport Harbor, walk along Balboa Peninsula at sunset, and spend an afternoon shopping at Fashion Island. For drinks and bites, we’d head to Topside Rooftop at Lido House, and one night would definitely include a stop at Shamrock, one of my favorite local spots because it has such a relaxed, hidden-gem feel.

To me, that’s the magic of Orange County: beautiful scenery, great food, an active lifestyle, and an atmosphere that somehow feels both exciting and completely relaxed at the same time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without question, my shoutout goes to my parents.

A few years ago, I found myself feeling completely lost in my corporate job. I knew I wanted something different, but stepping away from the stability of a traditional career path felt way to risky. When the opportunity to audition for American Idol came along, my parents encouraged me to take the leap rather than play it safe.

That decision ended up changing the entire trajectory of my life. Leaving my corporate role led me to pursue opportunities I never would have considered otherwise, including building my own social media management business. Like most entrepreneurial journeys, it came with financial uncertainty and challenges in the beginning, and I’m incredibly grateful for the support my parents provided during that time.

I’d also be remiss not to mention my family and friends, who have been nothing but supportive throughout every pivot, late-night idea, and leap of faith. Having people in my corner who consistently believe in me and cheer me on has made this journey that much more meaningful. Whether it’s FaceTiming my friends to share a new song I’ve written or bouncing ideas and creative concepts off my boyfriend, their unwavering encouragement has given me the confidence to take risks, trust my instincts, and build a career that aligns with who I am. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
