We had the good fortune of connecting with Antoinette Van Dewark and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Antoinette, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Did you forget? DYF is an intentional event company. When covid hit I turned DYF into a virtual hub for intimacy, vulnerability, and information worth of remembering.

Did you forget? What makes someone want to remember something? When something brings you quality of life or aids yours personal agenda, you tend to want to remember it. For me being balanced and positive was always more difficult, every time I would have an epiphany or learn a tool that could bring me ammo to beat the negativity I harbor, I would want to share. I love hosting Did you forget podcast because it creates a safe platform for my guests, who are artists and individuals who inspire me about what they think is important to remember.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a DJ, Producer, & Sound Engineer, I like to choose frequencies that are sexy and groovy, but also deep and hard. As the host of DYF I like to research things that are remembering worthy. I usually add information I find in my dj sets, and also in the songs I produce. The biggest challenge is my ego, honestly I struggle with delivery in my personal life and I always get really nervous before sharing these deeper sets, they are such a reflection of who I am in this moment. How does one overcome ego. .. well I’m still trying to figure that out, but meditation, journaling, and affirmations really help me. My go to motto is vibe > genre, because I don’t like to just play one style, I play to how I’m feeling. At the beginning of my career I was strongly advised against that. I think that’s where the initial hesitation in my ego comes from, not wanting to be wrong. My main purpose in life is to enjoy and inspire others to do the same, so how could honoring my moment be wrong? And so it is 🙂

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Los Angeles, the first place I would take them is this little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant, Tlayuda L.A. Restaurant, they serve the best tortes, chilaquiles, tacos, and horchata. Everything is handmade and delicious, and their staff always feels like family. They use very fresh ingredients. Being an undergroud dj I would take my friends to a warehouse party, for entertainment, maybe to jump into the ocean the next day. There are a lot of beautiful hikes in LA area as well.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m so lucky to have friends and family that support me. It’s hard to choose one person to shout out and give gratitude because I truly have so so much gratitude for so many in my life. My parents have really made my pandemic such a positive experience. I’m grateful for their time and the physical support, after losing both my jobs with no end in sight, they took me in their home in Colorado. Helping me move across states during the crazy time, made it possible for me to continue to do this work. I am forever grateful.
