We had the good fortune of connecting with Nefertara and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nefertara, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Because it’s written in my soul. Art is my passion and lifeblood. Creativity is power. Art heals and I love the freedom to create new worlds. I am always inspired and there is no greater satisfaction for me than physically manifesting my own artistic ideas in the material realm.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I always say if you don’t like your reality than paint a new one. Creativity is limitless. I use art as a tool for healing and hope my art can offer a temporary healing escape for others. I seek to be able to communicate visual narratives better. I want my paintings to be like visual prayers. Life is short & art is long. As a creator I am primarily a surrealist and a couture fashion designer. Experimentation, intuition, symbolism, mythology, the occult, history, technology, life experiences, pop culture, and nature all greatly inspire my creations. As a human I have overcome many seemingly insurmountable physical health challenges but art has always given me the courage and the inspiration to carry on. Don’t ever give up on yourself no matter how hopeless the odds seem. There is power in owning and channeling your own suffering and darkness into something constructive like art. We can’t choose what happens to us in life but we can choose how we react. I primarily use Mediterranean mythology in my art which is reflective of my own classical (Egypt, Greece, & Rome) heritage. As an artist I enjoy learning new skills and currently am working on my first NFT drop. Digital painting is a new skill set I am mastering. Fashion, sculpture, photography, music, and videography are some of my favorite ways to express myself creatively.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Beverly Hills cactus garden was my special secret hangout to sketch in during much of the lockdown. If I bring you there then we are tight.
Another favorite spot is the Los Angeles botanical garden. I love playing with the gorgeous wild roaming peacocks there. The plants are so huge there they look like they are from the Jurassic period. It feels like being in the realm of the Goddess Juno. The beauty of nature usually boosts my mood and inspires me.
Next,I would take my friends to the beach and get some surfing lessons! The ocean is refreshing, beautiful, centering and powerful.
We would visit the Getty Museum and check out the incredible Greco-Roman art collection.
Another spot would be horseback riding on the trails at Griffith park and then returning for nighttime full moon hike of Griffith’ park. My poet friend Alaska Lynch arranges the best moon hikes in la.
Lastly, we would do a fashion shoot and make art!!!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My friend Anda Volley has been one of the most supportive artistic friends to me. I am forever grateful for her as a muse. My artist friend Violet Page I am forever thankful for her guidance and support. Also, a huge thanks to my composer friend Gregory Jenkins for always believing in me and making me laugh.
