We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Butler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?

I think the most important factor behind my success of my young company was my ability to pivot to a mask making business when I was no longer able hold in person classes. My custom and batik style masks have kept my company afloat and actually thriving over the past year. I was very proud of the fact that I was able to employ 4 people who had been layed off.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I’ve always been big on art. Instead of your everyday paintings, I focus a bit more on glass, clay, and fabric. Glass wall monsters, menorahs, and hand-loomed scarves were in high demand while glass trays, dolls, candlesticks and clocks are truly unique and masterful. Nonetheless, with my art comes a fun lively environment you get the opportunity to create in. From tequila Tuesdays to wine Wednesdays, I always keep the studio a fun place to create art in. I have taken sip and paint to a new level with all different kinds of art. I like to keep things fun but it took many nights of trial and error to see what would work and what my clients would enjoy. Throughout the covid crisis I have learned to pivot my business to at-home art lessons and supplies instead of having people in the studio. I also created some zoom art lessons and class which have been a great success.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

If my best friend is in town, first thing in the morning, I’d have to take her for breakfast at a South Bay landmark since 1986 known as Eat At Joe’s. In my opinion, the healthy breakfast burrito as well as the John Wayne Special are a must! Next we would head out on our bicycles to ride the beautiful paths around Palos Verdes Peninsula. After a stop to view the beaches from the cliffs of Palos Verdes we would head to Good Stuff restaurant in the Riviera Village. We might make our way to L’Atelier Knitting and Yarn Store and chat with the owners Karen and Meredith. We would pick out some amazing imported yarns from their stash and stop by the studio to begin a few hours of weaving. At the end of the day we would walk to Hermosa Beach Pier to watch the sunset over the water and end the evening with a delicious meal and craft beer at Hermosa Brewing Company.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I have to say I come from a family of VERY strong a successful women who are my role models and greatest cheerleaders. My mom Jessie, is an artist and photographer and at the young age of 85 is still out and about shooting landscapes and portraits in the community and abroad. My sisters are all high powered in their fields of real estate, law and construction are working with my nieces who have had to take over a family construction business due to the tragic and sudden loss of their father (my brother in law to Covid ). This group of dynamic and brilliant women helped me my launch my business and help my business thrive through the pandemic, guiding me with new business ideas and marketing tips.

We are happy to say we have now reopened and have begun in-person art classes as well as kids classes.
