Meet Megan Blanchard: Singer Songwriter, Filmmaker, Permanent Makeup Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Blanchard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I worked at some big studios, in supporting roles, over the years, the main one being Warner Bros. Film, Television & Music. I’m so blessed, those were once in a lifetime type experiences and I met some lifelong friends and mentors. But as I became more and more of myself over the years, I started to notice how different I was from my peers. I was fiercely independent and experimental and I realized that I needed to be somewhere where life was a bit looser and wilder and I could continue to develop myself as an artist. And then come back full circle.

My career in music as an independent artist had been steadily growing over the years. And I was getting more freelance music video work as a director. But I knew, that alone wasn’t going to be enough to support me. At this point I had also met many very successful artists and musicians who I really looked up to. And the crazy thing about this business, is that you can be so talented and even find mainstream success, and still pin yourself into a corner that you cannot get out of. So I decided I wanted to become more adaptable and diversify my talents and my income.

Around that time I got some permanent makeup done: Microblading and Lip blushing. And I instantly knew that I wanted to start doing it. So I got my body art license and I took classes and I just started doing it. It is such a perfect fit for me. It’s artistic, meditative and I loooovvvveeee making people feel beautiful. In music and film, I work predominantly with males and so it’s such a nice balance to have something where I work predominantly with females in their feminine energy who are coming to me to pamper themselves. I love what I do.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Musically, as a sing-songwriter, my greatest gift is just my sincerity. I think it comes through in my voice and my lyrics that music is a religious kind of practice for me and that I take it very seriously. My influences are everything from folk and shoegaze to grunge.

I direct my own music videos, short films and videos for other artists as well. My directing has a handmade, voyeuristic feel to it. It’s romantic, whimsical and sometimes psychedelic. I love layering images, using mixed media and sometimes stop motion animation. Some of my heroes are John Waters, Sergio Leone, Wes Anderson and Michel Gondry.

As a permanent makeup artist, I have a very natural style. The biggest mistake I see most pmu artists make today is that they use very specific and “trendy” brow shapes. But with me, I go with the natural shape of the brow bone and so each client’s brows are unique and fitting to them. I use all organic pigments with no heavy metals and I use a fine blade to create the most natural strokes.

I think the biggest challenge being a creative type is just the discipline it takes over yourself and your own mind to take your grand, beautiful and far fetched ideas and translate them into real world action in a way that is connected to tangible goals and not just spinning your wheels. For me, I had to start looking at the big picture, setting my decisions against the backdrop of the course of my life.

The more I learn, two lessons keep repeating themselves to me endlessly. The 1st is to listen to my inner voice. And the 2nd is to listen to my inner voice.

Also, the mouth is a weapon to be wielded wisely.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So if you’re coming to LA, you gotta drive along Mulholland at sunset. It’s gorgeous and the nostalgic spirit of old Hollywood will overtake you. There are plenty of good vantage points to watch the sunrise as well. Golden hour in LA is just shock to the heart beautiful.

My favorite affordable restaurant in LA is “Home” in Los Feliz. And my favorite upscale restaurant is Yamashiro. And if you are down to drive way out into Malibu, go to Geoffrey’s. It’s out of this world.

You gotta go thrifting, so go to Shareen Vintage or Polka Dots & Moonbeams if you want something really nice. And you gotta hit the Fairfax flea market on Sunday.

And if live music every opens again, Monday nights are where it’s at in LA. Be sure to hit the Hotel Cafe for songwriter night and then finish off the night over at the Viper Room on Sunset.
