We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Fiske and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, what’s your definition for success?
Contributing to society while serving the person you are at the core of your being.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always been drawn towards experimentation and experience.
Started painting and drawing like I was possessed as a small child, this led me to be the painter I am today.
For the past 2 years I’ve painted circles. Planets, portals.
One shape and one size – each represents a form of energy or a phase of Earth.
Summer, Winter, Sunset, Storms, Serene Fields.
I want to be able to share a deep part of my soul with anyone willing to look – because I believe this is the true purpose of Sentience, therefore “art”.
Woodworking came as the desire to be a functional and competent member of society. I wanted to know how things were made and how to make them properly.
These skills interact constantly – I try to bring the elegance of a brush to woodworking, and the strength of woodworking to painting.
Having 2 crafts which I love deeply led me to continue my training and enter the field of massage therapy. To retain a human connection. To help people – not just try to help people with art – which a lot of times becomes an ego based projection – literally help people feel at ease in their bodies in the moments I spend with them.
I consider it a linear line of progress. When being creative – I’ve always wanted to lift the spirit of others, and now I can try my best to do that in various mediums.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Missoula, Montana. If one of my good friends is going to visit, I’ll have somewhat of an idea of how deep they want to travel into nature, or if they want to experience the city-village-town I am currently part of.
One of my favorite past times is definitely spending a night away from machines and electricity in the woods with friends.
Once we get back to it all, just walking, sharing healthy food. Drinking healthy drinks.
The simple things, I suppose.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Kelly & Kenji.
Ancient Esoteric Texts, Nature Poet Gary Snyder.
Wise man Alan Watts.
Grandma, Mom, & Family.
Friends. FRIENDS, FRIENDS.
NATURE.
Water.
Kids.
Animals.
Air.
