We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Becker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When your back is against the wall, you are flat broke, and you have lost everything I dont think the thought process is well defined, at least it wasn’t for me. When I found myself at the lowest point in my life, the only thing I was thinking about was how am I going to eat dinner and put a roof over my head. The decision to start a business was more logical than it was strategic.

Having no formal education past high school and no real skills to speak about, the decision to start a business came from the one thing I did have lots of, grit. Facing adversity as I’ve never experienced before, I asked myself a simple question. What’s the worst thing that can happen? It was at that point I decided that I was going to start a business. If I was going to win or lose, it was on my terms this time around. I lost everything because I put myself in a situation where I didn’t have any control. That would be the last time.

Now the thought process behind the business I was going to start was much more in-depth and well thought out. In 2009 when I made the decision to start my own business, the economy had recently imploded and consumer spending was at an all-time low. I knew I needed to find something to sell that was “recession-proof”. I always heard while growing up that during hard times, people spend money on alcohol, pleasure, and drugs. People have a natural desire to feel good when things are inherently bad. Thinking about the 3 industries that were recession-proof, I immediately knew drugs were off the table. I was not going to break the law after all. Thinking about alcohol, I didn’t see a way to get into that industry with no start-up money so in a strategic move, I decided to get into the industry of pleasure.

I sold off the furniture I had left, traded a room from a friend for ownership in my new company, and raised a few bucks from family. I was off to the races.

In the grand scheme of things, it was still fairly early in the world of eCommerce and selling online so I decided it was the perfect time to teach myself how to sell a recession-proof product on the internet. I spent the next several months and years essentially faking it until I made it. At night I read everything I could on starting a business and learning the ropes of eCommerce and during the day I would make calls to companies in the industry just to talk to the salespeople. They are full of great information. I went to every tradeshow I could afford to go to and basically networked my way into a real business. Making these invaluable connections is one of the most important keys to my success. You can’t do it alone after all.

I would like to say the rest is history but the truth is, the next decade of my life was full of incredible hardships that had I known about, I may have rethought my decision to start a business. Business is about constant education and evolution, tides change quickly and if you are not changing with them you will find yourself left behind.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My company is RMMD Company (Rocky Murphy Michelle & Danny) The names of my dogs and then-girlfriend, now wife Michelle. It was actually named before I had my son but unfortunately, a name change just isn’t in the cards. My next business will be named after my son Jack.

RMMD Company is the parent company that owns several brands and websites in the adult industry. Most notable are The Enhanced Male (https://theenhancedmale.com) and Lynk Pleasure (https://lynkpleasure.com) We are the leading online retailer of men’s sexual health and wellness products and have more recently manufacturing our own brand of men’s products. We are very unique in the sense that we focus on men (anybody with a penis) only. Stores within our industry tend to focus on women and couples first which has always left a big gap in the marketplace. Before we launched The Enhanced Male, there was no safe and secure place for men to find products especially for them. Before us, men were an afterthought in the retail space. If you wanted to buy a product for a guy specifically, you would need to search a site focusing on women and couples first.

Business is not, nor has it ever been easy. If you are looking to get into business to create an easier lifestyle, think again. Entrepreneurship is the only job where people quit a 40-hour workweek in order to work an 80-hour workweek.

Through my decade-long experience owning my own companies, I have struggled more and had lows I never thought possible. While I never thought ending life was an option, I can tell you there have been many times where I was thinking how much easier it would be if it was all over. The stress and struggles are very real for many business owners.

I have been dead broke 2 times in my life now and the thing that got me through my first time was the exact thing that got me through my second. Pure grit. When quitting is simply not an option, you will figure it out. Funny enough, it’s these exact struggles that the best ideas and greatest successes are born from. Find me a successful business owner I will show you a person who has failed at least once. Take the word quit out of your vocabulary if you want to succeed in business.

I truly believe it is hard to succeed without failing first. Failure is the greatest education. One lesson I think is important to note is that where you end up is most likely not where you intended to be. I did not start my business to get into men’s products but only through struggling in the bigger industry was I able to identify an opportunity staring me square in the face.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am all about the outdoors so if my friend was coming to visit, they better bring some boots, jeans, and a hat. We probably wouldn’t stay in town too long as the activities I find most fun are outside of the city limits.

We would definitely grab some In-N-Out burger on the way out of town. We would take whatever highway is needed and head straight for the mountains or coutry side. Each of the days would involve fishing, hiking, riding, target practice, and hopefully a rodeo or two.

At night we would most likely be found at a country bar drinking some bud lights and putting back some Jack Daniels. Once the bars closed we’d start a bonfire and finish off the night listening to Cody Johson or George Straight. Rinse and repeat.

That is the perfect trip for my friends and I.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The list is too long as there have been so many great people who have helped me to get to where I am today. I would like to acknowledge my wife though. I met her during one of my lowest times and she has supported me every step of the way. She is my rock and without her, I don’t know where I would be. I would also like to acknowledge my mom as well as she is one of the toughest people I know and I believe I get my grit from her. If there was one book I can acknowledge as well, it would be How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. That book taught me life lessons that have helped me through every part of business.
