We had the good fortune of connecting with Koni Buenaventura and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Koni, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started thinking about opening my own recording studio when I realized that it would be the best way to keep growing as a sound engineer. Running my own business allows me to have the freedom to be artistically open and carry out any vision or concept- the possibilities are endless!
I am at a point in my life where I have been fortunate enough to experience and collaborate with many artist from different countries – such as working with Argentinian alternative band, El Otro Yo, to GRAMMY winning artists, La Ley and Zoe, to working on Marketing campaigns here in the US for T-Mobile and Toyota, and more. I am currently blending all those amazing experiences and to bring my own perspective by collaborating in new projects!
I am committed to keep on learning and experimenting. A studio is like a lab, where you want to collaborate and enter into new partnerships where you want to create something new!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The journey definitely wasn’t easy, but it was worth it! If I look back, I think of all the different moments that have brought me to where I am at. I can distinctively think about how I have lived in different countries and I started from scratch a couple of times, but I always stayed optimistic!
Right now, I am where I want to be- doing what I want. I believe being true to oneself is one of the most inspiring and motivating things you can do. I think that’s what makes us unique.
Running the studio with this vision, I have been able to work and collaborate with people with the same disposition where we work as a team and expand our creativity without limits. Bringing together this type of positive energy from different people creates results that are awesome. That’s why Delight Sound Studio is a place for open collaborations!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love LA and its infinite things to do. We have an amazing multicultural city with plenty of options for everyone. We are also surrounded by beautiful beaches and mountains where we can spend time enjoying and reconnecting with nature.
Downtown LA, Hollywood, Malibu and Venice Beach are a definite must in every visit. I love the Last Bookstore and the Central Market in Downtown. If you like music, you have to visit Amoeba and the Hollywood Bowl.
On a Sunday, Venice is unforgettable! You can take a bike ride to Santa Monica, enjoy the drum circle, and view the sunset from a rooftop bar; these are things I loved to do with friends.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a big Shoutout to Paco Huidobro! I consider him a friend, mentor and more. We met in Mexico a long time ago and he saw something in me that I had not even seen. He writes and plays in a Mexican band called Fobia, which was one of the original bands to emerge from the “rock en español” scene that boomed in the late 80s/early 90s. He encouraged me to take on new challenges that I didn’t think were possible. I have always been able to bounce off ideas with him and receive the feedback that is needed, which I really appreciate.
Besides Paco, I want to give another Shoutout to my family and friends who enjoy my achievements as their own. I am very grateful to be surrounded by amazing people who support me and help me to keep growing and follow my dreams.
