We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Marquisha Frost and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Marquisha, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the most important factor behind my personal and brand success has been faith. No matter how dark, how complicated, how challenging or impossible a thing seems or feels, I don’t give up. I don’t give in. I trust the process and I trust God for victory because I know that I am doing the work he has purposed me to do.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Queens Do Things Inc. is a non-profit dedicated to empowerment and serving as a platform of action. I am most excited about our on-going Girl Chat series which takes place via Zoom where we discuss several topics and invite women from all around the world to share. Our level of engagement has sky-rocketed and I feel so fortunate to be doing this work of positively impacting the lives of women across the world.

Getting to this space hasn’t been easy, by any means, but it has been so worth it! Growing up we didn’t have much. I come from extremely humble beginnings, but even out of the little we did have, my mom always found a way to give. This platform allows me to honor my mother in passing on what she’s given to me, so I share it with others. As a teen-mom, I didn’t think the life I have now was possible. I thought I failed and threw my life away, but I was so wrong. I completed undergrad, two master’s programs and a doctoral program. I now encourage and create opportunities for other women to achieve their dreams. I particularly feel called to create space for the narratives of women of color.

I’ve learned that I don’t have to be perfect to walk in my purpose. So, in all of my imperfection, I’m doing the work anyways. I want people to know that there’s always room for them in the work we do at Queens Do Things Inc. and that we’re committed to meeting their needs, creating opportunities and sharing their stories for the empowerment of others. We inspire, grow and create, in community with other women.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh gosh! There’s so much to choose from!! I was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, so I still haven’t gotten over the beaches. We’d HAVE to spend about 50% of our time sun-bathing at Huntington or Venice beach and the other half exploring all of that LA has to offer. We’d eat at The Serving Spoon, Earle’s on Crenshaw, Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles, Granny’s Kitchen Southern Style Soul Food and the Little Kingston Jamaican Restaurant. I love to EAT, so they know if we do nothing else, we will enjoy a meal together! I’d also want them to see and experience downtown LA. I think it’s a direct reflection of today’s reality. There’s energy, laughter, hustle, and there’s also pain and a real need for us to see others beyond their circumstances. I like to go with no agenda and experience the space because there is always something happening! We’d have to also visit Claremont. It’s where I received my PhD and there’s a restaurant there, Euro Cafe, that makes the BEST panini in the world!!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Whenever I consider how far I’ve come, I think about those who have helped push me along. I’ve already credited God for his unfailing grace and mercy, but in addition to Him are some of my favorite human beings: My husband, DelAngelo & our sons, Ma’Kye and Myles, my parents and god-parents, my baby sister, my mentor, Ricky Smith, and my Bishop & Elect Lady Bryant of Hope & Refuge Ministries as well as my small group of girlfriends and mentees. In a lot of ways this non-profit is representative of the small group of women that have been emotional, physical, and mental homes for me over the last several years. They have all encouraged, carried, and made space for me to be who I am. They have also allowed me to become. . . even when it took me away from them. I am eternally grateful to each of them. They’re just as dedicated, and in some instances more so, to my success than I am. This work is certainly a collective effort and I again, feel so fortunate to be the face of and for it. Truly, it’s an honor all mine.
