We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Over time I have had to remind myself of the importance of a healthy work/life balance. I think as artists we constantly use life itself as our muse. We write and create based on what is going on around us and the life experiences we have. Unless we are expanding that creative palette, we will never grow as people and therefore never mature as artists. On a daily basis, I am working to expand my knowledge in different areas … finding different passions besides what we normally consider part of our career. Right now my biggest hobbies include photography and going to museums!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

Growing up in Australia, I developed my passion for music from a very young age. I have been blessed to work with some mind blowing people along the way including collaborations with Grammy-winning producers and absolutely incredible writers.
Pre-Covid I spent the last three years in Los Angeles growing as a musician and as a human. The path to where I am now has definitely had it’s up and downs. Moving countries was a whole new ball game! It takes a different kind of mindset to be in an industry where you have to expose the deepest parts of yourself for your artistry as well as leaving yourself completely open for all forms of judgement. That is why it is so important to support your fellow artists! I am thankful to be surrounded with the most supportive friends and colleagues. I strongly believe in aligning yourself with people who are good for your soul. The energy you surround yourself with ultimately affects you as a whole. I get to do what I love and share that love with other people. It is a privilege to be in a position to do that.
In saying that, I have worked my butt off and will continue to do so. I’ve done the 9-5, the casual work, jobs that aren’t even remotely connected to what I do now, to get me to where I am today. It’s not easy and there is no manual on how to get there. I’m just grateful that I get to live my passion.
In 2018, I toured North America with my own solo tour including a number of Pride events. From 2018-2020, I was a featured artist on three national tours with High School Nation performing for more than 70,000 teenagers and was a key panel member in their performing arts mentoring sessions in high schools, something I’m very passionate about.
For 2021, following on from my debut EP ‘Girlboss’, I have two new singles set to drop before the end of the year, including one in just a few weeks! I’ve always been involved in the creative direction side of my music, the artwork, visuals, dance concepts, all of the extra elements needed to turn a song into an entire project. It’s my favourite part!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Not being from LA originally, I’ve had lots of friends who have given me the grand tour. My personal Sunday would be a hike in Runyon Canyon, coffee at the Grove, hitting up the Melrose flea market, followed by a class at Playground LA, then moving onto margaritas at El Tejano’s in North Hollywood and pre covid, some live music to finish off the night! When my Aussie friends come to visit we would definitely add in Malibu Beach, the Venice boardwalk and my favourite LA house show, Saturday’s at Seven!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Mumma! She’s the cutest. Big love to her. She is the strongest woman I know and my biggest supporter. She has made me the badass woman I am today. There have been so many who have been a part of my journey that I will never be able to thank enough. A big thank you to all of the writers, producers, choreographers, photographers, and mentors I have had the pleasure of working with and who have generously shared their talents with me.
