We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcie Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marcie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After working a few years working corporate as a social media strategist, I decided to strike out on my own so that I could take on clients and projects on my own and have more flexibility. Working as an entrepreneur allows me to pick and choose projects that align with my values as well as create a healthier work-life balance.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When asked what I do for a living, I say I am in marketing, specializing in social and digital media. I do consider myself a writer at heart though because writing has always been an integral part of what I do. I’ve written for many print and online publications. I’ve even written a book! And currently, I am working on my very first script for an animated series.
If you were to look at my career path, I’ve mostly been involved in Marketing and Media. Before immigrating to the US (from the Philippines), I was involved in publishing, radio, and TV. I came to the US, got married, and had kids so while work took a step back for family, I was always writing. I had a column for a small-town paper, I was a magazine contributor, and I was blogging before it was even called that.
It was a little challenging to get started in media being an immigrant, but I always believed in myself and my skills and I’ve always had a strong support system. Being in the ever-evolving world of social media marketing, I am always learning. So in a nutshell, the major lessons I’ve learned are to never stop learning and to surround yourself with good people.
Right now, I help people utilize social media marketing tools to promote their events, brands, and nonprofits. In the past I have been involved in promoting ballet shows, Surf City Surf Dog, the Taste of Huntington Beach, as well as gala fundraisers for nonprofits. I even produce and host shows from time to time in person and online.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When we first moved from the East Coast to California, we had family members visiting us all the time. And of course, my family from the Philippines would come too – so I am happy to play tour guide. In Orange County, I like showing off the beaches – Huntington Beach to watch surfers or even to learn to surf… Crystal Cove for the tidepools and Laguna Beach for either the Pageant of the Masters or Sawdust Art Festival. I’d arrange a nice little sunset bonfire in Huntington Beach too to give them that quintessential Southern California endless summer experience.
For out-of-town guests, a day in LA usually consists of touristy stuff like Hollywood Blvd, the Walk of Fame, and the Grove and Farmers Market. I warn them that it’s probably not like how they imagined it but you know, it’s what they want to see. Of course, they always want to see the Hollywood Sign. So I’d probably take them on a hike around there. And then I take them to the Getty Center because the art is amazing and of course the views from there are priceless.
I’d take them to eat all the things from authentic Mexican tacos from a food truck in Santa Ana to ramen in Little Tokyo and fancy $5 donuts.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This shout-out is dedicated to my very supportive family, my creative community in Orange County and LA, and to my fellow Filipino-American and Asian-American creatives.
