We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah C.R. Makins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, how does your business help the community?
Through teaching and choreography, I try to heal and inspire through the art of dance. I am finding more and more of my students have higher levels of anxiety, crippling worries of perfectionism as well as the deep need to share, learn and grow in a safe and loving space. Through learning and performing choreography that has story lines and themes describing ways to emote and then heal these issues, dancers and audience alike gain exposure and therefore understanding into some of the darker issues affecting our youth and young adults.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My passion is to help others through the art of dance. For many years now, I have taken a group of my dancers to the Dream Centre in LA – an incredible organization that caters to the homeless in Los Angeles. With the help of my students, I teach dance to the incredibly talented children that live in the projects of South Central. They have so much potential but do not have the funds to take formal dance classes. It is a highlight in our year as we look forward to seeing them and working with them and holding dance as an International language of communication and joy.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am absolutely adore Muttarts Conservatory in Edmonton as a place to take visitors or just have a wonderfully uplifting experience on a day off. It is a set of greenhouses in the form of a cluster of glass pyramids. Incredible experience year round to be in and around four different habitats of greenery and incredible floral arrangements. So good for the soul.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My incredible mother Joan Makins dedicated her life to helping me to become not only the best dancer that I could be, but also the most evolved person – both behind the scenes and on stage. One of her most inspiring concepts that she taught me and my sister is that a kind and compassionate person will always be the best performer…. that kindness MUST be the backbone of any great career. I use this concept to teach all of my students and it is the main governing principle throughout each of our projects.
