Meet LaToya Dennis | Owner of Callidora Makeup

We had the good fortune of connecting with LaToya Dennis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaToya, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I grew up not liking my own face and body. I was taller, brown and awkward looking in my mind. I was teased and told that I was weird. These words sometimes made me feel inadequate. But my love for art was and edifying outlet. It was my happy place! It is my peace.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started working in the make-up industry in 2006. My aunt Vonda Frezzell who owns a hair salon allowed me to work on clients in her secondary store for free until my skills were solid.
I had to overcome so many things including my own fear of failure. But, in spite of all odds I never gave up. Through much practice and dedication I am now living out my dream. My faith in God, consistence and networking has allowed me to work as a Key Artist at the prestigious New York Fashion Week. I have worked with amazing Designers such as Romona Keveza, Malan Brenton, and Romeo Hunte to name a few. My work has been featured online in Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Hype Hair Magazine.
I want everyone to experience the amazing gifts and talent that I offer. Most importantly, I want people to see honesty, professionalism and an attentive artist who wants everyone to feel their best.
I aim to please and everyone leaves with a smile.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend took a long trip to see me we would definitely have to get breakfast at the Green Eggs restaurant in Philadelphia. They have the best breakfast! I’d take her to see all of the beautiful mural art work in the city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are several women in my life who deserve credit for my evolution. My mom ofcourse because she raised me to be a God fearing go getter. Also, my Aunt Vonda she had to working in her salon as a young teenager. She is the person that took me to the fabulous Bonner Bros. Hair show wear hair and make is a big deal. This is wear I actually became obsessed with makeup!
