We had the good fortune of connecting with Brenda Wyatt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brenda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After working for a fortune 500 companies leadership team for over 20 years, I realized my earning potential was limited in corporate America. I would never fully live the life I longed for or have the freedom I desired with the salary constraints, bonus drawbacks, vacation limitations. Most companies have salary caps of 10%, with bonuses being a small percentage of annual compensation, and limit vacations based on tenure. My transition began with working a 2nd job to obtain some experience in mortgage lending. Soon I gained the clientele and relationships that allowed me to leave my corporate job, tripling my income within 7 months. That same year, I reached a pinnacle in my fairly new “side business” and was named a top producer! I’ve been a top producer since.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The gap in the homeownership rate between black and white families in the US is bigger today than it was when it was legal to refuse to sell someone a home because of the color of their skin. The housing crisis hit the black community harder than other racial groups. Black homebuyers were disproportionately the victims of predators who offered subprime loans even to those who qualified for prime loans.
With the intention to do my part to help reduce the racial homeownership gap, my business was built focusing on educating underserved communities, often with imperfect files, low price points, and limited experience with home buying. I made a deliberate commitment to treat each client with the respect and attention they deserve, never turning people away, taking time to educate, and finding the right solution for my clients and referral partners. As a result, most of my business is with 1st-time homebuyers of all price points.
What sets me apart from others is I do the things I don’t feel like doing, prioritizing them – speaking engagements, studying, hosting open houses, working with folks with not-so-nice attitudes, and prospecting for new business. I believe the universe rewards hard work, and the reward usually doesn’t come as expected, but it comes nonetheless. In addition, branding myself, as opposed to my firm or parent company, was a deal changer. Also, taking photos that made me feel good gave me confidence in marketing myself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
