We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Dalbeth and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mark, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in New Zealand. From an early age I always worked very hard for everything. Never had anything handed to me, it was always a struggle but that is the way I prefer it. New Zealand is a very small country and a big climb for someone with goals of ‘Making it in Music’ but as long as the drive is always there, then it can be achieved from anywhere.

Being from NZ, I was used to being the underdog and that was fine with me. Was quite happy to just dig in and work that little bit harder to get the rewards.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s been a grind from day one. The music industry is ruthless and it is very hard to breakthrough if you don’t have large amounts of money or high up there contacts to push you up.

So it’s important to remind yourself always of the mindset that it is not about fame, money and material things. The forefront has to be the art itself. I am always personally focusing on the songs first, always trying write something better, always trying to improve and never letting myself get comfortable in what I am doing.

Having moved from NZ, to Australia and then finally to America, I have become used to resetting and building things up again. I like that challenge. I think if I just stayed in Australia with the band I was in, I wouldn’t have evolved as a musician and person and would have just got too comfortable.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am living in Orange County, California now. It’s a great spot, Lots of cool little bars and places to check out. I’m about 30 minutes away from LA also so there is a lot of places that everyone should at least see once.

From Sunset Strip, to Hollywood Blvd, the Hollywood sign and of course Rainbow Bar and Grill…iconic and their Pizzas are badass!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I moved from NZ to Australia, I started a band (Bellusira) and a huge part of that band doing well was the support of the fans. It really was a community of people that were all trying to push the band forward as much as they can. That really was amazing to be a part of.

There are so many people in the industry that often get overlooked from the sound person, lights, backline, studio engineers, merch people, art designers, video creators and editors. Everyone of those people all contribute to the success of a project. It is never just the band members themselves.
