We had the good fortune of connecting with Jerimiah Payne and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jerimiah, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose to pursue a career in art because i find it the best way to be expressive. I use my art as a form of a journal, alot of my songs and poems is a form of me talking to my self as well as exspressing things that I experience through life. Rather it being joyous moments, lost of life, or overcoming obstacles, each project reflects who I am and things that I have endured through life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of the projects Im really excited about is “Make A Move LA” . Make A Move LA is a 20 player Chess Tournament,Music and Networking event that me and my team at “Grind and Inspire” and “In The Trap”  put together to bring the community together through Chess and Music. With our unique tournament and halftime show , we are able to bring people together from different walks of life ,and it is a beautiful thing to see. Artistically what sets me apart from other is my ability to tell my story in a unique and palatable way, through music and poetry.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hands down for breakfast we would eat at Metro Cafe and get some Banana House Special Pancakes, those will change your life. If their in a burger mood we would definitely go to Fresh and Meaty Burgers on Florence and 8th Ave and get a “Grandma Burger”, best burger hands down in the city. For dinner Damas in fashion lamb chops and street corn will make the most sane person flip out, and why not not end it with seeing a movie in a luxurious way at Ipic Theaters. Entertainment wise if “Make a Move LA” is going on that weekend, we would have to go there and check out the dope talent at their Halftime Show while vibing to the house dj “DJ ThroBak” spin some great tunes, and see how the South LA Chess Community gets down.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother and father is a strong driving force to my pursue in an artistic career. Always supportive and believing and my vision means alot coming from two different backgrounds. My mom who took the climbing the ladder route at a job and my pops who took on the entrepreneurial route as a self employed plumber, I’m doing both. Working a job, but using it as a financial resource to contribute to the entrepreneurial path my father took, but in art. Another driving force is my late and great friend Godwin “Goddy” Thurton who passed months ago due to Covid-19. He was a person who was actively pursuing his dream while balancing being a great father as well, so to give up on my dreams and goals is never an option. Everyday isnt the best day , but when i do have those not so great days, I’ll think of him and get right back to it!
