We had the good fortune of connecting with Dustin Jacobs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dustin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Chuck: I had a conversation with a distributor in which she said reality shows were getting picked up by networks left and right. I thought Dustin and I could use that connection to get our own shows off the ground. I approached him with the idea and he agreed it made logistical sense. We’re both creative people and enjoy narrative projects, but this was a chance to get some shows picked up and seen.

Dustin: We were never fans of reality TV before the creation of Hooty Hoo Productions, but we thought there might be something there we could explore. That’s proven to be true with the projects we’ve put together thus far. Reality TV is viable and it’s everywhere. The human race seems to love it and there’s no denying it. So we thought we would be like the 49ers and dig for that gold!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Dustin: The thing that I’m most excited about is our current project – always our current project. What we’ve done is done, and there’s never any guarantee we’ll ever get to do the next one. The next project we have (which we can’t talk about yet!) is one of our most exciting. But just think of all the people out there trying to break in, and the fact we’ve worked with distributors to put out our work is very humbling. Each project we try and up our game, and I’m personally the most proud of that.

Chuck: I’m the most proud of the fact that we’ve adapted into being producers, actual producers. We’ve worked with budgets, we’ve hired professionals, we’ve accomplished goals and finished shoots with no issues, all things I was worried about before we started. I like to say after each day we hit the mark if we got our coverage, everyone was happy and fed, and nobody got hurt. So far we’ve hit that every time, and it ticks a box for me that I wasn’t aware I had inside of me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dustin: For Los Angeles, I would take them to Warner Brothers Studios for a tour. I also love hiking, whether it’s Runyon Canyon or Griffith Park. The Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Chinese Theater are always great as well. It’s always difficult to see the “real” LA in just a few days. Hanging out in West Hollywood, walking the neighborhood of Los Feliz, going to a Lakers game at the Staples Center, they don’t showcase the diversity of the city. It takes years.

Chuck: For Atlanta, if you’re coming to eat, make sure to just drive down Buford Highway and pick a place. There are hundreds of unique, diverse restaurants to choose from, and they’re all delicious. Go see a movie at the Plaza Theatre, especially if there’s a film festival currently going on. For a great view of the city, hike up Kennesaw Mountain.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Molly Coffee, because she has always been supportive for both of our endeavors and been very honest with what we’re doing. Friendships and partnerships like that is priceless. If you support yourself with yes people, you end up with inferior products. The three of us started around the same time and we hope to continue our paths to success well into the future.

Also, Angela Edmond has been a great help to get us to this point. She’s a big reason we started the company, and has been a guiding light in the crazy world of reality TV.

Our pal, the comedian Eddie Pence, had the faith in us to shoot his first comedy special and make it work. After 20 years in the business, he could’ve gone with anyone, and he chose us, which made us work that much harder on the project. We were so glad it was picked up by Comedy Dynamics so the world could see how funny he is.
