Meet Talia Dinwiddie | Photographer for Brands and Makers

We had the good fortune of connecting with Talia Dinwiddie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Talia, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“There are two kinds of magic- love and color.”

I cam across this beautiful quote printed on a very old marketing postcard for a, now defunct, antique framing company about 6 years ago. It immediately resonated and felt special to me! I tried desperately to find the author, or any other instance of this quote online, to no avail. Without any other context, I felt as though it were meant for me to find and adopt! As a photographer, I feel this encapsulates the two types of magic I try to bring into every job. I love what I do, and often the visual expression of that love comes through as color palettes that bring joy. One of the first things new clients usually tell me is that they love my use of color. I have books upon books about the subject in my studio, and am always looking for new ways to incorporate color theory into my work. I use this quote as a north star in my business, and frequently ask myself if the gallery I am delivering feels like a true manifestation of these virtues- magic, love, and of course the power of color!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What I about being a product and brand photographer is getting see the passion from the brand owner, and translating that into images their audience loves and responds to. The details we put into shoots all are designed to cast a tone and a voice for the products that the owners have invested themselves into so deeply, it only makes sense that we match that investment into the imagery. I’m trying now, as a business owner, to be sure I have that same level fo care with my own operations. Making my business a source of freedom for me instead of overwhelm has been a big focus for me recently. I’m learning and balancing as I go, and I think that’s something all creatives can relate to.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love everything in Highland Park! I would take them for some margs at Nativo, then to Wolfies for a hot vegan chicken dinner, Block Party for some after dinner fun! We would shop at the unique offerings on York Blvd, flip though the vintage racks on Figueroa, and maybe get some new jumpsuits at Big Bud Press. Cocktails at Good Housekeeping before ending the night at Blind Barber. All great spots to show visitors because they’re all one of a kind.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My dear friend and talented graphic designer Brennan Woo is not only a peer, but has always been a champion of my work and success. His taste and standards are very high, and I’m so grateful he’s worked with me for years and always helped and encouraged me to reach those same heights. Our respective work with imagery and graphics pairs together well, and he’s been generous enough to bring me into most of his creative pursuits. Together we have created a visual identity for 6 different concepts and I love working in service of his visions.
