Meet Jisoo Chung | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jisoo Chung and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jisoo, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I will ask myself if this is the best shot I could possibly do, if there is anything left that I can try.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a multimedia artist based in Seoul and Los Angeles. Through videos and installations, I explore the ‘constructed language’ in everyday objects and technologies. Looking at language as a remnant of the power system of the social structure, I am interested in the irony that the ability to perceive and communicate with the world is conducted with this faulty language. I think about the coexistence of individuals and systems between the desire to be accepted within an existing language system and the desire to be resistant. From the perspective of female Korean immigrants whose understanding of themselves is held with the language rooted in patriarchy and colonization, their psychological contradiction is viewed as a possibility of a pluralistic viewpoint towards the system. Failure of language such as automatic correction, mistranslation, and misinterpretation become the motif of my works. I work in a way that amplifies the humor and irony of this failure.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I will recommend the night scene at the hill of Montecito heights, Joshua tree camping trip, and a trip to Sequoia forest. I would bring my friend to a Korean restaurant Sun Nong dan for Galbijim and Miari Noodle house. Also I will bring them to La Cevicheria to have fresh fish tacos and aguachiles. Mizlala is also a place that I would bring my friend to try chicken shawarma. After, I will go to The Bar at Johnny’s to grab a beer. The next day we might go to Malibu beach to do boogie boarding.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my partner Sean Sprague, who always support me with care, my longterm best friend Woohee Cho, who knows about me the most that he reminds me what I do, and my business partner and friend Jenny, who I learn lots of things from, and my community GYOPO, the people I felt so grateful for their unlimited support.
