We had the good fortune of connecting with Tahera Rene Christy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tahera Rene, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m originally from Oakland, California. I am an 80s baby and was brought up in an urban setting where I had to fend for myself often and figure things out quickly for my own survival. This created my desire to seek opportunities to work for myself and make a difference within my community. This was a huge advantage for me in my adulthood because I learn to work hard early in life. Much of my business practices today stem from seeing unfulfilled needs in my community. I create solutions to everyday problems that are far more universal than my neighborhood. I now have a global outlook of relatability that encourages my customers to remain loyal to my brand.

Also, I have always been involved in sports, which created a competitive Spirit within me. This combined with my corporate sales background allows for me to have the tenacity and perseverance necessary to be in business. The key to success in business is consistency and creativity. I have both!

Self-Love is a journey.

I spent so many years of my life not feeling worthy of love. I worked on the outside of my face, hair and body. I achieved success at work. I gathered many friends and admirers from networking, but I never felt my very own sense of self-worth.

After a moment of deep depression and frustration with my life’s path, I packed my bags and took a solo trip to Porta Vallarta to find myself. I read self-help books, I cried, I journaled my heart out, I saw a reiki healer and got in touch with nature. I was able to find myself, by myself, within myself during those moments alone in the darkness of my past. Confronting my demons released me from my own personal hell that I was no longer bound to. I was free to love me completely!

Later that year on a visit to my best friend’s home, I noticed that she had a bottle of smokeless smudge spray on her bathroom counter. Curious, I sprayed its mist above my head and instantly released all of my tension, cares and worries. I closed my eyes and imagined space of simplicity and synchronicity with the energy that I wanted to generate in my life. I was refreshed, renewed and restored!

I immediately bought five different versions of this amazing product anywhere I could find it! That day, I fell in love with the concept of smudging.

What’s the greatest gift you can give a creative person?

Time.

About a year later, I found myself unemployed from my corporate sales career because of an epic viral pandemic that forced me and much of society to stay home and create. I was able to recreate my own version of the amazing smokeless smudge spray that changed my life’s perspective and my business was launched in March of 2020.

Self-love is the staple emotional theme that has inspired my success as a life coach, author and creative. I wanted to create my company with the root of love as the foundation to its success.

My husband and I were having a conversation about what I should call my company. In his wordplay genius, my husband came up with the name, Amour Propre, which means, “a sense of one’s self-worth” in French. We added the necessary redundancy of “Love” to Amour Propre and our business was born.

Being a home chef and creating delicious cuisine that my friends and family have enjoyed for years aided in my desire to incorporate additional products to my line of smokeless smudge sprays. I wanted to create a line of natural and organic products that my family could use and support my community with education about the importance of using natural ingredients.

Amour Propre continues to develop and has taken on a life of its own! I enjoy creating products that solves problems, invokes positivity, feel amazing on the skin and inspire my customers to share their joy with others.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend lives in Miami and when she comes to visit Southern California, I always take her to the beach! We found ourselves in the sand and connect with the sounds of the ocean waves as they crash into the ridge rock formations. This activity can spark an appetite, so I would take her to for a delicious meal. My favorite poke bowl spot, followed by a bowl of Gelato makes for a tantalizing end to a wonderful day!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am extremely grateful for the support I have received throughout my professional career thus far. I owe much of my success to my husband and my mother because of their undying support of my elaborate ideas and extreme tactics. Without their encouragement to stretch my limits to seek fulfillment outside of the boxes that could limit me, I would not feel as free as I do to explore the possibilities that exist beyond my general scope. I am very lucky to have so much support!
