We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Huebsch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
In the Art field, there is a lot more than just making and creating artwork. There’s networking (ugh), writing, research, running a small business. It can be all consuming at times. For many of us that coincides with having another job/career. I have been fortunate to be an educator and the past few years I have been teaching art/glass at Cal State Fullerton
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a bit of a chameleon; I can create using any material. Even though I have a really wide range of skills and ideas, there are conceptual threads that run through all of my work: environmental health, specifically humanity’s use of the natural world as a bottomless reservoir for both raw material and as a garbage dump, and man’s awkward fumbling through day-to-day life. In 2019, I was invited to be the first artist-in-residence at a plastics manufacturing plant in Woodstock, IL, specifically to transform waste or recyclable raw plastic into artwork. And last year, my work was featured in “New American Painting” (issue #145); that was a nice acknowledgement of my dedication to my studio practice.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start off with doing something outside, since I surf I would take them to Pt. Dume or The cove down in Palos Verdes. Minus all the driving and traffic, we would have (lunch) falafel sandwiches at Dune and then check out some galleries that are located at 1700 S Santa Fe Avenue.
From there grab a beer at Boomtown brewery and cruise over to Hauser and Wirth gallery and then continue walking over to Little Tokyo and have a cocktail at the Mermaid and decide where to keep drinking…
Grab dinner at Modern Times (downtown) or go up to Wolfies in Highland Park and finally dessert at Magpies across the street.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
