We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicolette Paige and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicolette, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose to pursue an artistic career because my music is not only therapy for myself, but an inspiration to those who enjoy it. I love using music as my outlet, I love being on stage and reaching the soul of the people. Even if I tried to completely stop pursuing music I don’t think I could do it because wherever I go, music is sure to follow somehow, always extending opportunities for me to create.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Music is my therapy and is a reflection of the many stages I’ve been through in life. What sets me apart is my unique style and my raspy voice that many people seem to love. My voice has changed over the years due to a vocal cyst & scar tissue on my vocal chords that I’ve had for almost 10 years, it can be difficult to sing with but I make it happen. I am most proud of the opportunities I still get to create music even though I don’t pursue my career like I once did. I choose family over everything, and as a mother it’s very important I take as much time needed to be with my children. Because of this, people are willing to accommodate to my busy schedule and create safe places for my children and I to be so I can create. I am respected as a mother first and this I appreciate very much. It was not easy to get to where I am today, but it sure was fun! I overcame many challenges with the help of family, friends, meditation, and prayer.. One of the most important lessons that I’ve learned in my music career is to go at my own pace, stand my ground, and don’t let anybody rush me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly, I love nature and that is where I would choose to go. I would take them to the best trails that I know of in Kansas City and may even take them on a psychedelic journey to the depths of their soul. We could eat fresh fruit from the orchard that my boyfriend and I own, the Kansas City Urban Farm Co-Op, or we could get oxtails at Wah Gwan Jamaican & Nigerian restaurant. I would take them to my favorite metaphysical & holistic healing shops – Harvest Moon Botanica & Aquarius KC. Most definitely we would spend a night listening to a live jazz jam session at the Mutual Music Foundation. I would also love to grab a bottle of wine and take them to the Nelson Atkins Art Museum. Then we would go back into nature, perhaps find a good camping spot and enjoy the simple things.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my parents for always believing in me and investing in my music. Growing up my father always introduced me to a variety of music that influenced my songwriting skills. My mother was my manager most of my life and always made sure I had unique notebooks ro write in. Together they put me in voice lessons, piano lessons, drum lessons, guitar lessons, bought me my first instruments, and fully funded my first 2 albums. They often traveled with me to most of my shows. I was and am still very blessed to have their support. I would also like to thank Kansas City for all the support I’ve always gotten and still get from fans, fellow creatives, and friends. What a gift!
