We had the good fortune of connecting with Jose Quintero and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jose, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“Ask and You Shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be open.” I memorized this verse since i was 15 years old. Far beyond being a verse in the bible I took it for it’s literal meaning and applied it to life. I grew up shy and reserved, but I knew i had big dreams. I recited this every day to lessen my fear of asking for things, because the worse you can get was a “No” but at least you asked. I sought and looked for my opportunities, i was persistent. When i looked for a job in Spanish entertainment i knocked on that door and when they shut it on me I’d find a way to climb in through the window. Taking the verse as a quote has been a huge reminder in life, that we can do anything we just have to want it and go for it. To this day i recite it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Watching spanish language Television like univison in my household was a daily activity with the family so no doubt about why I wanted that to be my career. Telling your Mexican parents and family that, is a another story one that would be controversial. I remember mentioning it in high school and they brushed it off like nothing because as they say “Se le va pasar” it will pass. It was something so far fetched to them, their son on TV, that would never happen to a low income family, especially their straight A student who had the capability of getting into med school. So with that energy, while in college I ended up taking my pre requisites to med school, and passed with flying colors, but it wasn’t my life. I was living my parents dream. But i was afraid of not living up to their sacrifice. They left everything so i could become something. By my second year of college i put on my big boy pants and i told them i wanted to pursue entertainment. This became a heated debate for months as family members, older cousins, would come to my household and lecture me on being selfish and not thinking of my parents sacrifice. I didn’t listen. I took a risk. I graduated in 2014 with my Bachelors in Marketing and a minor in acting and spanish. Here i went to purse my dreams. Before i graduated i met someone from univision who allowed me to volunteer. I lived in San Bernardino. I would drive weekends to Los Angeles to volunteer, for free, at events in the hopes of landing a job. For two years i interviewed until i grew tired of it. I started my own youtube channel in the hopes of practicing my spanish, my fear of being in front of a camera, and content development. This was June 2016. Little did i know that during this time of refocusing and practicing i would get the call that would allow me to be a step closer to my dream. May 2017 I got the call and had 1 week to move from San Bernardino to Los Angeles. Leave my full-job for part-time job where rent was tripple what i could afford. The first months were hard i lived in a garage with no insulation and would wake up to roaches on my legs. All of my money went to gas, sometimes all i would have to eat was canned tuna and saltine crackers. I didn’t care i was chasing my dreams. 3 months into my job i was offered a full-time job as a radio producer for KLOVE morning show. 9 months into LA i was able to get my own apartment, no more roaches. Fastforward to 2022 im living my dream as a radio host on Cali 93.9 along side legendary actress Angelica Vale. would i change my journey, no! It’s giving me grit and reminds me of how far iv’e come.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting LA we would start off by having breakfast in Lady Byrd cafe in east LA they have amazing pancakes there. Afterwards we’d probably end up going to the gym, since we’re fitness fanatics. Lunch would definitely be at my favorite seafood spot Coni’s seafood in Inglewood. We’d head to venice beach and probably spend the rest of the day there. At night we would probably go to the Art district for some drinks. Sunday would be more of a relaxing experience after a full day of experiences. It would start by doing the Hollywood sign hike and possibly heading over to the Griffith observatory. If time were to allow in the evening Katsuya sushi in Los Angeles right across the pantageous theater and finish it off with a good show at the pantageous.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Women, by far have been the source of my success. I always say i stand on the shoulders of amazing women. It starts with my mothers love and support. My mother, as any other mother, wanted the best for me. As a Latina mother, she wanted me to a doctor, lawyer, nurse. I had dreams of entertainment, but no one in my family had any idea how to support me in this crazy dream, I had to fend for myself. I remember in college Univision came to my alma matter and i met Yadira Rosas, who allowed me to volunteer and shadow her on multiple events, she didn’t have to but she did. Along the way i met amazing women like Fernanda Martinez who also mentored me during these unofficial internships. I remember after about a year of volunteering I had the opportunity to meet Beatrice Gomez, who took over the events at univision and a year later i got a check from her, my first pay check from univision. Little did i know she’d introduce me to my future boss Mayola Delgado who really took me under her wing. After two years of interviewing and getting turned down at univision, Mayola hired me. Thanks to Mayola she introduced me to Univision Mid day News anchor Yarel Ramos. Who eagerly said she wanted me to help her create content little did i know that working on what was a fun project for both Yarel and I she would recommend me to Los Angeles legacy Spanish Radio Station KLOVE under the direction of Isabel Gonzalez. Being immersed in radio solidified my love for entertainment and fulfilled my childhood promise to myself. It ment the world being mentored by women like Argelia Atilano, Maria Elena Nava, Dona Ji, and Denise Reyes, all women who didn’t need to help me, but wanted to. Fast forward to today that boy is still dreaming working alongside legendary actress Angelica Vale on Cali 93.9 with an amazing team Angelica Bivian and Luisa Rodriguez. So yes, I stand on the shoulders of Amazing women. Gracias!
