We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Vallar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, how do you define success?
Sadly, our society conditions us to believe that success is defined by the completion of achievement of something. If you strip away the opinions and expectations others have, you realize that success is a definition of your own design.
I do not look at success in the form of a destination, monetary figure, or status. Success comes from the action you put towards your goals. You do not always have to win or achieve your goals to be successful. Allowing yourself to try, embrace change, and take risks defines your greatness.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
When I think about my business, I don’t think of it as something new or innovative. Faven is an organic cotton underwear line specialized in simple silhouettes for everyday wear. I didn’t create Faven to reinvent underwear. I created Faven to provide quality-made products using eco-friendly processes. Even today there may be countless brands creating the same types of products. Yet, what makes Faven unique is that I can tell you exactly who makes each piece of underwear: Me. I cut, sew, dye, and package every pair, and being able to share that makes me feel powerful.
I’ll lay it out there truthfully; running a business is hard. There is always something challenging you, pushing you, or working against what you want to achieve. Constant affirmations, expecting the unexpected, and a willingness to learn have helped me navigate the challenges of running a business.
If I could sum all the lessons learned into a phrase it would say “Just be yourself and the rest will fall into place!” Running a business is an adventure and you are what makes it unique!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Where wouldn’t I take them? LA is such a great city to adventure. My itinerary would include:
Early morning hike at Echo Mountain to catch the sunrise
Lavender Lattes at Bia Coffee
Brunch with friends…if I could decide where!
Vegan donuts at Donut Friend
El Matador beach in Malibu
Skyspace just for the view The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Before I get to the person in mind, I want to note that I am forever grateful for the endless love and support from my family, friends, and loved ones! They have given more than I could have asked for towards my career and life.
As for the star of my shoutout show, I want to dedicate my shoutout to an amazing friend, outstanding mother, and the most wicked creative-minded friend I have; Kara.
I have been so honored to have her guidance throughout my entire career and entreprenuership. I cannot express how monumental our moments together have been. I would not have enjoyed or endured all the twist and turns of my career and life without her support.
Thank you Kara for being such a strong and vivid foundation in my life.
