Meet Angelica Montaño | Singer-songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelica Montaño and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angelica, how do you think about risk?
Life is filled with risks since the second we were conceived; and that is what makes life so interesting and beautiful. Weather it is a simple, small, big or important risk, there is not a day or an hour we do not have to take a risk. When we hear the word “risk”, myself included, we still freeze. But what if instead of wiring our brains to have such a negative emotion attached to that word and see it as a positive and an opportunity to challenge ourselves in a way where we can grow and accomplish more of our life goals? That is what I am constantly working on, to unlearn that negative emotion attached to such word and create an emotion that fills me with motivation and excitement to go after my goals and dreams. The biggest risk I have taken, besides falling in love, is deciding to dedicate my life at a very young age to my love for singing. I said goodbye to an average life to chase my career as a singer. Singing is such a big risk not only financially due to how many people must go on your payroll, but also it is an emotional and spiritual risk. Every song I create and release, every outfit I chose for my videos/performances, etc. are all risks, but each risk I take I make sure I believe in my decision and believe in my creativity at its fullest. Without risks we would not know how to appreciate those feelings when the risks we took were all worth the trouble. Even if the risk did not turn out as you have hoped, there is always something good or a great lesson along with the “failed” risk. Being the first singer- songwriter in my family after a generation gap was and is difficult. I am at sea alone luckily along my journey I have met such wonderful people that have helped guide me and teach ,me and taken me under their wing as if I was a part of a musical family.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a singer-songwriter. My story is a bit out of the ordinary. Ever since I can remember I would always tell my mother that when I grew up I was going to be a singer. I grew up in a non musical family, so I had a lot of learning and unlearning to do once I was older. When I was in school all I could think about was music. I waited with excitement the day we would have music class. I always dreamt of recording my own songs, creating my own music videos, photo sessions since I was very young. My journey as a singer has not been easy, I have had to work probably three times harder and longer than someone that was fortunate to come from a musical background. The reason I do not have any musical family members is because, similar to the movie “Coco”, my grandmother was not a fan of music nor for her children and future generations to have a career in it since it is a very competitive, difficult and pricey career path. As I got older I did try to venture into different paths but somehow I would always end up back at music. Something about music just fires my veins in my body and creates such a beautiful world for me. When my world has been falling apart music was always there for me. The times when I feel misunderstood, sad, angry, happy or any other emotion, music has always understood exactly what I have gone through.
Being the first one in my family to create a musical career has not been easy. As I have noted above having to learn and unlearn was not an easy path. I had to learn how to be patient with myself and the process of developing my voice, I have fallen many times to the point of giving up, but what kept the fire going was my love for singing. Everyday that I wake up I try to be a better singer than the singer I was yesterday. I love to challenge my instrument and I am astound of how far discipline and consistency can take you in your goals and dreams.
I want the world to know that no matter what your passion is. No matter how many people around you tell you to be realistic or that you can not do it, never listen to them. If you believe deep in your heart that whatever it is you are pursuing is for you and you love it, I say go for it no matter how hard the journey is, how many times you will fall, how many non supporters you encounter. I promise you that if you stay focused, consistent and disciplined you will be able to look back on your journey and realize how much you have grown and how far you have come and be proud for every step you take no matter how big or small it may be. Like my first role model used to say “always believe that the impossible is possible”- Selena Quintanilla
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, here in Southern California there is a lot of amazing places to visit and to eat. If one of my close friends were to come and visit I would take them to one of our beautiful beaches such as La Jolla Shores, Our next stop would be Griffith Park Observatory for the amazing city view, and if lucky, we will catch a nice clear day and be able to see the shore line. Let’s also not forget to take photographs for our memories in front of the Hollywood sign which is right next to the Griffith Park. For dinner I would take them to Yamashiro for some delicious Sushi. After taking to the city and a few nights in the Hollywood vibe, we would go to Catalina Island and spend a few days touring the island catching a nice view of some Bisons, foxes, eagles and so much more. To end our trip in Southern California we would go to Palm Springs to unwind and relax.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
yes definitely! I would like to dedicate my shout out to my mother, my boyfriend, and to my supporters and my team that continuously help me make my dreams and goals come true.
