Meet Robert Mack | Ivy-League Educated Positive Psychology Expert, Celebrity Happiness Coach, Published Author, and TV Personality

We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Mack and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I didn’t want or intend to start a business, initially. I only wanted and intended to be happy. That was my deepest desire and greatest intention from the start. It only became a business later.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a happiness coach, I’m proudest of my ability to find true happiness. My greatest achievements have always been internal, and happiness—inner peace—is the greatest of all achievements for me.
I spent most of my childhood and young adulthood suffering from depression and suicidal ideation. I even had a suicidal experience in my early 20’s. I never imagined that I would end up being a happiness coach.
My business grew out of an unplanned, unscripted, and ultimately selfish desire to be happy. I didn’t set out to build a profitable business; I set out to build a happy life. This happy, inner life became a rewarding, outer business over time.
I didn’t get into this business to make a lot of money. If I only wanted to make a ton of money, there are a lot of better businesses for doing that! Haha! I got into this business, so to speak, out of an initial desire to (a) become happy and (b) help others become happy.
I didn’t make much money in the beginning, In fact, at first, I couldn’t even give my coaching away! Ha ha! The more I tried to make my business grow, the less it grew. But the more I focused simply on being happy—while doing whatever else I needed to do to make enough money to support myself—the more my business grew.
Along the way, I’ve learned countless lessons, including (1) the importance of prioritizing happiness above all else and (2) trusting that success will follow.
The most important thing that anybody can take away from my story is that, no matter what you think you want, you really just want happiness You really just want to feel better.
Feeling better—feeling happier—is something that is possible for everyone, no matter what. And when you feel better or happier—which is the point of it all anyway—you also do better. Life also goes better for you, too.
As I am sometimes fond of saying: “Happiness isn’t only the greatest success; it also leads to success!”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would go to Santa Monica Beach and the Pier, stop by Thunderbolt Bookstore, stroll along 3rd Street Promenade, and then wander up to Pacific Palisades and down to Venice.
On the weekend, we would take a trip to the Self-Realization Fellowship Temple in Santa Monica, eat pizza at Fresh Brother’s, and eat donuts at Sidecar Donuts.
If they were into sports, we would check out a Laker’s game, take a hike at Runyon Canyon, visit the Griffith Observatory, and check out Universal Studios!
For a more touristy feel, we would take a trip to Sunset Blvd and Rodeo Drive, go shopping at The Beverly Center and The Grove, and stroll down the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In terms of late-night dining, we would explore Elephante, the Rooftop at Proper Hotel, Craig’s, Spring Place, and maybe Bungalow.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First of all, I want to thank Life (God). Second, I want to thank my family and friends. Third, I want to thank all of the teachers I’ve learned from over the years.
And of course, I’d like to thank Glenn Marsden for being my friend, including me in his Imperfectly Perfect Campaign, and referring me to Shoutout!
