We had the good fortune of connecting with Garnet Clarke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Garnet, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
I value love the most. Because it holds a big place in my life and how I operate day to day. A few years ago I was mentally and emotionally hurt. I didn’t believe in myself and I faked my emotions almost everyday. It sounds very cliche but I really had to find the love for myself again in order to allow myself to have those emotions and be ok with them. This is why love is my number one value for myself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a professional dancer what sets me apart from others is my fierceness to my art and how much life i bring to my movement quality. I always want to make others feel something when I move. I want to be sure others notice how much value there is in dancing. It not only looks so cool and complex but it has so much emotion, creativity and uniqueness behind it that is sometimes overlooked. And I feel like I express that value of dance. It wasn’t easy getting to where I am today. I had to be consistent and adapt to changes and I also had to remind myself that I was enough and worthy of making a career in dance professionally. There were times where I thought I wasn’t good enough or couldn’t do a lot of the things I can and did do. I would also compare myself to other people and dancers in the studio and feel so unsupported and unrecognized and under-valued. I had to learn that I need to prove it all to myself, and that I am the creator of my own reality. I can not control everything but I can control my effort, attitude and choices. So I choose to love myself no matter what. And I want the world to know that I am claiming everything that is mine and I am creating the best version of myself and I am not giving up.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Besties are Back ( a week of chaotic adventures)
Monday – you arrive at my place and we literally go buy ice cream and snacks and binge watch movies and TV shows all night
Tuesday – have a late start we make some really good food and have a picnic and photoshoot date on the beach
Thursday – go to as many thrift stores in one day, and of course take as many photos as possible.
Friday – we take dance classes and end the night rewarding ourselves with Kai Ramen and Jeni’s ice cream and find a spot on the beach to vibe and listen to music, maybe even do a freestyle session.
Saturday – visit a random museum neither of us have ever been to and learn something new
Sunday – go to the escape room and see who can unlock the secrets first.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely want to praise God for all the things he has done for me and the many things to come. I also want to shout out Jeremy Taylor for nominating me to be apart of this series.
