We had the good fortune of connecting with Tami Barrios and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tami, what role has risk played in your life or career?
“No risk, No reward.” When I heard someone say this, it resonated with me for so many reasons. I thought if I do not take a chance on myself, then I won’t be able to reap the benefits. I would never truly know if I’d be successful at having my own business. Self-doubt is toxic. Risk taking is a hope of something you really want and its encouraging! Sure, there is the chance to fail, but failures are lessons that create growth in your business and in yourself. For me risk taking played an invaluable role in my career and life. I was 29 years old when I took a risk to change my career from a kindergarten teacher, to being a cosmetologist. With having four children to help support, it was a huge risk. I went to school for almost two years full time. I hustled on the side as a certified makeup artist to bring in some income to help support my family. Changing careers at my age was extremely scary and I was fearful of it. Time was ticking and wasn’t going to wait for me. I had to believe in myself and have the confidence to take the risk. You glow differently when your confidence is fueled by self-belief. Risk taking also includes hard work and dedication. You have to go out and take every opportunity and work it, to make your business successful. I have experienced many ups, downs, obstacles, uncertainties, and cost. Risk taking has also made me wise in my losses. It’s all been a part of my risk-taking journey to get my business off the ground running and to stay that way. I trusted the process and continue to take those risk to receive the rewards. Take the risk and thank yourself later.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Every consultation, formulation, extension application, haircut, color, lightening service, shampoo, makeup application, hair style, skin service, wax, brow and lash service are an art to me. There is an art and craft to each service I give to my clients. There is a lot of thought behind it. I am constantly thinking of how I want to achieve that final result, how am I going to give my client the result they want and how am I going to get to our goal. I am proud of how far I have come in my craft and to have the artistic skill to be creative for each and every client. I am excited about being able to share my skills, and to continue my education. As well as always giving back to the community. My clients trust me to beautify them and be there for them. I look forward to seeing so much more to come in my industry and I am here to soak it all up. Never giving up, sacrifice, determination, and working hard has got me to where I am professionally, it was not easy, I mean is it ever? I overcame my challenges by staying focused, and I kept going, especially when things got rough. Give up or keep going, they both hurt the same. Having a good support system was so valuable to me and my career. The lessons I’ve learned along the way were what misses me wasn’t for me, every closed door is another opportunity, and rejection is redirection. I want the world to know that if I can do it so can you, faith it till you make it!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My cosmetology teachers at Citrus Community College played a huge role in my love for what I do. They encouraged me and fed my passion for learning my craft. My children who drive me to want to always be and do better, my husband’s unconditional support and constant motivation. My close family and dear friends, who believe in me enough to always refer new clients. They are my constant support system, and my personal cheerleaders. Thank you to my partner, we get to work together daily and help each other along the way. Most importantly Thank you to each and every one of my clients for their continued support and loyalty. It means everything to me. Without my clients I wouldn’t get to do what I love daily, while supporting my family. My clients are a part of my success. I am so very grateful for all the referrals they send me. I have friends that have become clients and clients that have become friends, It’s a privilege and an honor.
