We had the good fortune of connecting with Saffie Camara and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Saffie, what do you attribute your success to?
The reason why Saff Candles is doing so well is because of the support of community. In 2020, we were all on lockdown and during that time I found comfort in being able to enjoy music all over the world via Twitch. While watching DJs and Producers stream, I made friends in the chat who have not only supported my business but have become lifelong friends and been a bright spot during this hard time. With the strength and help of the community my buisness has grown beyond what I ever could have ever imagined.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The idea of Saff Candles came about in March 2020 when the pandemic started. My goal was to bring together my love for essential oils, natural products, and music. all of the candles are made with 100% all-natural soy wax and essential oils. To avoid waste, the jars and lids are reusable with recycled packaging. I recently started djing which has been a fun experience and way to express myself. When I first started Saff Candles, I would upload a playlist on Soundcloud monthly but in March I made the first Saff Candles mix. I will continue this each month providing a mix expressing my current mood and/or theme for candle drops. I also mix every Sunday on my twitch channel (twitch.tv/saffiesaff) to practice and upload a mix each week on Soundcloud. This process from beginning to now has been a journey, to say the least. Saff Candles is a small Black women-owned business operated by just me. My biggest challenge as a business owner has been finding a balance. This is something that I still struggle with today but learning as I go. I’m excited about the future and this is literally just the beginning.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend come to visit I would definitely suggest a good mix of touristy things they could do along with some hidden gems around the city. Los Angeles is very large and spread out. There is a ton to do out here from beaches, bars, and museums! for some touristy activities would recommend the Griffith Observatory for a nice view, Urban Lights at LACMA, the Getty, Last Bookstore, Venice Beach, and Santa Monica Pier. Some of my favorite food spots are Eggslut, King Taco, Silverlake Ramen, Gracias Madre, Escala, Milo and Olive, Coffee + Plants and Poppy + Rose. Nightlife and music events in Los Angeles are amazing with so much to choose from!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate a shoutout to my Twitch family who has supported me through everything. From encouraging me to start my business to being a bright light in my life during the pandemic. They have provided me with so much joy, laughter, comfort, and healing through music during the pandemic. I really owe it all to them.
