We had the good fortune of connecting with Benson Chau and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Benson, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is mainly my girlfriend Jenny. She inspires me everyday to keep striving for success and to look forward to the future and what I may achieve. She keeps me motivated every day and I love her for that. Some days when I feel down and unmotivated to even do anything, she’ll surprise me with the littlest things; like boba or taking me out to see some fantastic cars. We both love cars and it just makes us smile every time we see a great looking car.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I recently just took photos of my friend’s Toyota Corolla Hatchback and he inspired me and told me many issues he’s encountered as he’s already had mostly all of the aftermarket parts on his car, as we both drive the same car. Recently throughout this photoshoot, after editing I really took a step back and kind of realized that these photos have so far been my best. I lightly shed a tear afterwards but it made me so proud of what I’ve become and the journey that I’ve been on. My journey from a few years ago in 2018 after buying a camera and just playing around with some settings and taking random street photography has come a long way. I’ve learned mostly everything I have always wanted to do, but of course always with room to learn. Creating images and memories that can last lifetimes is amazing.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live and grew up in the local area known as the “626.” I didn’t know it at the time when I was a kid in high school, but I love living here. I still live here in San Gabriel. Boba places are all over the city, from the eastern part of Los Angeles, all the way to West Covina and Pomona. I love eating and of course boba. A good time I’d start with is grabbing some breakfast at Urth Caffé in Pasadena and my favorite entrée is the famous pecan sticky buns. They’re truly addictive and the taste is incredible! Sticky, delicate, sweet, and decadent. Afterwards, I’d get some tea at 7 Leaves Cafe in Alhambra, but be careful for my lowered car buddies, the driveway is terrible! My favorite go to is their Oolong Milk Tea. Afterwards, we’d probably head over to the beach or any coastline as we are in California! We’d take some pictures, talk about our aspirations, and I always make my photoshoots fun. For dinner, we’d stop at Aikan Sushi & Ramen.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The person I want to give the most credit and recognition so far in my journey is my girlfriend Jenny @socalcelica, on Instagram. She’s an aspiring model and I take her photos along with a lot of other photographers out there. She inspires me everyday to do what I did yesterday, better today. She encourages me to seek out new aspirations and reaching for the stars in my career. I haven’t landed any professional photography gigs, as I’m still seeking out careers for it. My dream is to one day perhaps see my photograph of an amazing car used on a billboard or an advertisement for Instagram as a promotion by a big name company.
