We had the good fortune of connecting with Jack Jack and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jack Jack, how do you think about risk?
I believe that risks are necessary to learn and grow in whatever you do. As a DJ, there are times where I am presented with new, unfamiliar opportunities. I could always play it safe and stick with what I know, but taking that extra step to step out of my comfort zone is what drives me to be better. I would not have gotten to where I am today as a DJ if I settled for that comfortability. There is so much more out there to experience and explore.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started DJing in 2013, but did not become public about it until 2019. I am an open format DJ, primarily focusing in hip-hop and R&B. I think where my strengths lie are in my ability to blend contemporary and throwback music together in such a way that isn’t distracting or off-setting for the listener, on top of sprinkling a little bit of my own taste in remixes/edits in between. I enjoy curating a setlist that any music lover would enjoy, even if it includes genres you don’t particularly listen to. My DJ journey has not been easy. There is no learning curve to this industry! You have to have such thick skin and be prepared to have bad nights with the crowd. Each of these experiences, good and bad, are what help shape you to become a better DJ. I just hope the world is ready when I DJ at your local venue someday!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles is way too big. We would definitely avoid all the touristy attractions of LA. I’m not one to create a game plan of what my friends SHOULD do, but rather get a feel of what they’re into instead. But if any of my friends know me, I am very food motivated. So what would our itinerary consist of? Food, food, food. Ramen at Daikokuya, tacos at the El Flamin Taco Truck, Thai food at Jitlada, you name the cuisine and I’ll handle the recommendations. Besides the food, let’s go check out the museums in LA (LACMA, HAMMER, BROAD) or catch live music at Very Good Mondays at Gold Diggers. Feeling active? Let’s go hike or bike along the bike path on the beach!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First I’d like to shoutout my friend Jeff because without him I would have not made the push to even start DJing.

Then of course I have to shoutout my 143 family.

To Jonel, Samantha and Cody: thank you for all of the tremendous amount of support you all have for me. I continue to learn and grow under you three every passing day and I wouldn’t pass it up for anything else.
