We had the good fortune of connecting with Perfitt Richards Design and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Perfitt Richards Design, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

We had taken a break to raise our kids (Terrell has 3 kids, Joyce has 2). Terrell had worked for a small commercial design firm for about 12 years and Joyce had been in real estate for over 15 years. We were doing our own design projects at our homes, and friends kept asking us for help. We also spent a lot of time tooling around LA taking in the various neighborhoods and the design and shelter shops in each area. So our creative juices were flowing. As our kids got older and were more self-sufficient, we decided to step out and turn our creativity into a legit business. We can’t say there was formal plan or thought process. It felt right and we decided to go for it!

What should our readers know about your business?

We are a small, two person design firm which gives specialized attention to every design project, small or large. We love working with our clients to create a home that represents them, their family, and how they want their house to look and feel. It is fun for us to get to know our clients and their families.

Work is work, and fun is fun but we try to have fun while we work! There are ALWAYS challenges! We try to push on through any challenges and solve any problems with the client in mind (what does the client want, how can we best resolve this with them in mind). Communication is key when challenges arise. We like to be direct and in constant communication with our client, especially when resolving any issues.

A key lesson is perseverance and resilience! Like Dori from Finding Nemo, just keeping on swimming with a sunny disposition and don’t take anything too personally.

What we would like the world to know – is that we really like to laugh along the way. Humor and time are great solvents (one motto we have is Tragedy + Time = Comedy). We hope to be as professional as possible with a spoonful of humor.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

First stop is a visit to the Original Farmers’ Market at Third and Fairfax either for breakfast or for dinner and a drink. Terrell (Perfitt) was born and raised in LA, and the Farmers’ Market has always been that magical place. We both enjoy a musical show and picnic dinner on a warm LA night at the Hollywood Bowl with sandwiches and wine from Larchmont Wine and Cheese. So definitely would look at the Bowl schedule of events.
We love to treasure hunt at all our favorite shops – Nickey Kehoe and CoopLA on Beverly, Panopile on Melrose, Hollywood at Home and Harbinger on LaCienega. Second hand shopping at the Mart Collective and strolling down Abbot Kinney.
A visit to the shops at the Arts District Downtown and dinner at Bavel (yum!).
We would definitely schedule the visit so we could go to the Rose Bowl Flea Market on the second Sunday of the month. And after the Rose Bowl, lunch at Grand Central Market.
A music show at Largo, with drinks next door.
Dinner at Mozza for the last evening.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Gosh, there are numerous shout outs! First the city we live in is bustling with inspiration and creatives. We are especially grateful for the LA design industry – the shops, vendors, showrooms, fabricators, contractors, and architects who are so supportive and true collaborators.
Second are the design firms and real estate companies we worked for in the past. The leaders of these firms were great examples of how to run a business and how to have fun while doing so.
Next are our exceptional clients who trust us with the details of their homes and allow us to be creative and push the envelope a bit.
Lastly, we give a special shout out to our families who put up with us and our design business, and all that goes with it (meaning lots of schlepping products, sorting fabrics, listening to our stories, and having magazine pages, tear sheets and fabrics all over the house).
