We had the good fortune of connecting with Renee Lowry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Renee, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I’d say the most important factor that’s contributed to my brand’s success is authenticity. When I first started creating and designing products, I used to ask myself, “What’s something that everyone will buy and like? I need to make something for every type of person in order to sell as much as I can.” As I gained experience, I realized I was not enjoying the process or designing products that appealed to the masses. Now my first thought is always, “What’s something I would love or would buy to give as a gift to someone?” It really changed my perspective and I feel like I’m better able to connect to my customers because we have the same taste and the same sense of humor. I no longer care about what will sell the most, I care more about connecting and staying true to myself and to this new awesome community that I’m a part of.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is culture and connection all in one. I was born in Mexico and immigrated to the US at the age of 5. When I got here, I was in a major culture shock and missed living next door to my abuelita and the simple way of life in a pueblito. Life in Mexico was full of color, laughter, fiestas, and amazing food. When I create, I try to bring all of these elements into my art. I want to make you smile, laugh, reminisce, and connect when you see one of my items. I love the US and the opportunities it brings, but creating helps me keep that part of my culture close to me and share it with my community.
It hasn’t been an easy journey and I was so terrified of putting my work out into the world, but I’ve gained so much confidence along the way! I’m still learning and will probably always have something to learn, but that’s one of the most amazing things about running your own business. There is no one right way to do things and thinking outside the box will almost always be rewarding.
I want everyone to know that I’m forever grateful for all the support I’ve received. I never thought my little business would be where it’s at today and it’s all due to the support I’ve received from my community. I hope you’ll all come along with me for the rest of the journey.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would of course take them to the beach. It has everything you need to relax, people watch, food, etc. Also, a farmers market because they always have the best hidden treasures.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband 100% deserves recognition for going along with all my crazy ideas and always believing in me. Some ideas have worked out, some have not, but either way he’s always down for the ride and I appreciate him so much for that.
Also my abuelita, whom my business is named after, my mom, tias, and all the latinas in my life that give me daily inspiration for all my designs.
