We had the good fortune of connecting with Ronjini Joshua and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ronjini, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
It is critical to try new things and keep learning. Staying true to your values and methodology is important but if your business isn’t changing over the years to adapt and stay current, you will fall behind your competitors. Seeing and recognizing innovation has been critical to our success. We saw early on that integrated services were going to be critical, especially for the market that we were in, so instead of trying to create those departments within the business, I focused on cultivating partnerships that would enable us to stay nimble but offer anything that a startup may need in the communications sector.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Silver Telegram has been a constantly moving target. Always a public relations agency focused on media relations and getting attention for brands, the mission, and vision of the company has been shifting and transforming over the past 9 years. I think I finally got a grasp on the business after nearly a decade. There are many things that I didn’t know going into it that I think you can only learn from growing pains and there is a lot of GREAT advice that I have received from other entrepreneurs along the way. I never intended to start my own business, so there was a deep learning curve of adjusting to the operational side of things from just being good at what I did. I believe now that if I went into the business with the intention of building a brand that we would be at a completely different place now, but I’ve never been much of a salesperson. Most of the things I learned about business, I learned by meeting challenges head-on and dealing with them, which I’m not sure is the best way, but I’ve always been a trial by fire learner. The Silver Telegram has evolved into a business that is centered on teaching businesses and entrepreneurs the craft of public relations and brand awareness, not only doing it for them but explaining the process on the way. I believe that also sets us apart. We know anyone can do PR and would love it if more people tried to do it independently. However, if you need a partner in this area, The Silver Telegram is here for you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love SoCal so much. When friends come, Santa Monica is the place I like to go to. Hiking, working out, and even to Shrine Temple for a little quiet. I prefer places with fewer crowds so even Malibu and Santa Barbara are great to head over to, with great restaurants in all those places. In addition, I would always recommend heading over to San Diego. As a family with small kids, we hit up the Zoo’s any time we travel. It’s usually a place that everyone can enjoy. SoCal staples for me include In’N’Out (what Californian wouldn’t agree?), Urth Cafe, and usually beach-side eateries. Long Beach is probably one of my favorite cities, so I would want to go down to Nic’s on Second for sure. I would probably focus on the beach since that is definitely one of my favorite things about living in SoCal. If they came in the winter, going from the Beach to the snow-covered mountains in a span of a couple of days is always fun.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband makes it possible for me to dedicate the time I need to the business. We continue to work together to figure out we can make raising a family of five work with my schedule of running and developing multiple businesses and still have plenty of time for family fun. I have some accountability partners (and friends) that keep me motivated and pushing to get to the next level and providing a shoulder when needed. Most of all my three kids that get excited for ALL the ideas. Their enthusiasm for life confirms that we are paving the right way for them.
