We had the good fortune of connecting with Allie Ticktin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Allie, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up in a suburb of Detroit called Waterford. Growing up, I was always either playing with dolls at home or outside playing and creating new activities with the neighborhood kids – snow or sun. I loved being active and making different creations – like a baby doll stroller out of my current toys. I was also sensitive and at times had a hard time keeping my body regulated. It was through play that I was able to really explore my interests and learned very early on that my calling was to work with children. Being the daughter of a doctor, I naturally thought that meant I would be a pediatrician. But as I got older and into college (go blue!), I knew being a pediatrician wasn’t for me. I found occupational therapy and it immediately felt right. Once in OT school, I started making sense of so much in my own childhood which I now bring with me every day to work. Because of my experience as a child, I am even more passionate about helping children understand what sensory tools their own bodies need just like I wish I had known all those years ago.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is called Play 2 Progress and we are a play-based learning center. We use the science of sensory play to really help guide both parents and children through development in our classes, camps, 1:1 occupational therapy sessions and small group sessions. I really believe it is so important for all parents to understand their child’s development and how they can support their development through sensory play. In each of our classes, which are based on stage not age, we engage in sensory play (that engages all 8 senses) while helping parents feel more empowered and confident. I often say that I can’t stop until all parents know we have 8 senses not 5 and they understand not only how important sensory play is for development, but also what it really is. I also recently came out with my first book and virtual course which really allows my message and the power of sensory play to have a greater reach. I am excited to continue growing Play 2 Progress and see all the aha moments from proud parents and giggles from the kids along the way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hands down we would head to Malibu. Go and watch the waves, spot some dolphins and enjoy the ocean. The beach is my favorite spot and why I can never leave LA.

We would eat at summer fish n’ rice on Robertson which I believe is hugely underrated. We would also get the pesto kelp noodles from Cafe gratitude, wake up sunday and go to the melrose farmers market, another gem that is far under appreciated. I would also take them to Erwehon because it is so much more than a grocery store and head down to abbot kinney for an afternoon of shopping and walking the canals.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people who have believed in me along the way and it really all starts with my kindergarten teacher. She really saw my strengths at a time when I was struggling to keep up with my peers and not only believed in me, but shared that belief with my parents. Without her and a few other incredible teachers who always supported me wholeheartedly, I am not sure I would be here today. Also, each of my mentors and partners along the way who have not only made me a better therapist but also helped me become a better leader and business person including Candace, Charles and Allison. I am a big believer that people come into our lives for a reason and I am incredibly thankful for each person who has had a role in helping me get where I am today and as I continue to grow both professionally and personally.
