We had the good fortune of connecting with Devontae “Slim” Goodwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devontae “Slim”, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
One of the biggest influences on my choice to pursue an artistic career was 106 & Park Music Video Show. Every afternoon when school was out I’d rush home to see the hottest music videos and the latest fashion trends. Seeing so many successful black and brown faces being celebrated was inspiring. 106 & Park encouraged me in many ways.. showing me that I could turn my passion into a career. I knew then that I would make my dreams into reality!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The fashion industry has a wide spectrum when it comes to styling and wardrobe. As you advance in your career it’s common to bounce around within the spectrum of style. Currently I am focused on fashion styling as well as E-commerce styling. One year ago I began my career by collaborating with creatives via TFP. I hit the ground running by networking with an array of creatives and professionals to become familiar with the Los Angeles culture. As a fashion stylist it is my duty to successfully communicate concepts via clothes. It is my job to integrate all aspects of a person’s or brands visual aesthetic to create fashionable and appealing looks. I have put in a lot of hard work and still have a ton to learn, but I wake up every day dedicated and eager to improve my skills.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m an adventurous guy! I love to try new things and experience the world as God intended. I’m still sort of new to the greater Los Angeles region so I still have a plethora of places to try but I have a few favorite things to do in the city. At the top of my list is hiking! There are an insane amount of hiking trails that all have their own special quirks about them. One of my favorite trails to visit is Los Liones! It’s about a five mile trail that leads you up a mountain to an amazing view of the Santa Monica coast.. it’s absolutely breathtaking. A favorite bar of mine is Upstairs at Ace hotel which is a rooftop bar in the heart of DTLA. The drinks there are divine and the food compliments the cocktails perfectly. Now I really love food so I won’t even begin to try to list my favorite restaurants but one thing I will say to try while in Los Angeles is the street tacos from a local food truck and also Korean BBQ! And obviously we can’t forget about the beaches!! (My favorite is Venice beach)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a large support system and an abundance of positive influences. My friends and family are my biggest fans who always shower me with love and support. One organization that completely transformed my life was MODA Elite modeling troupe at The University of Alabama. Founder Zackery Coleman and President Daniel Grimsley established the Beta Chapter of MODA Elite my freshman year of college and my life was forever changed. The confidence, skills, and lasting relationships I gained from this group cannot be measured. Also my best-friends Denea, Leah, and Thomesha have been the best allies a guy could have. They have always accepted me for who I am; encouraging me and supporting me in any and everything I do.
