Meet Steph Campos | Founder & Chief Storyteller of Latinas Create

Hi Steph, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Without risk, there is no reward. I am always working from a place of having nothing to lose. So if I take a shot and don’t get it, sure it’s not fun—but I’ll know I tried and I am always proud of that. Of course, when it does work out that’s just all the validation more to do it again and again. Growth is on the other side of fear and I want to keep growing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have built my career in Communication and Community Marketing, working to tell the stories of the voiceless while also collaborating with leaders to create economic change along the way. Around 2013 I was a few years post-grad and found myself frustrated with the jobs I was getting, while I worked for brand like Red Bull, Coca-Cola, and Omni Hotels I was not in a creative role and this was super stifling. So, I took it to the gram—Instagram. In a few months I found I was able to crack to code and grow fairly quickly. After amassing a small following of a few thousand I was suddenly getting offers from names like ABC to collaborate and be a personality for the city of Dallas! I took that success and ran to California to find my next step. Like many, I found all that glittered wasn’t gold and I was back to trying to find my thing. During the pandemic, I had to take a look within to find my spark again. I realized that the stories I wanted to tell were that of Latina Creators. I was tired of the micro-aggressions when people found out I was a semi-successful Latina. Like yes, Latinas can look and sound all types of ways and we will succeed again and again! That’s when the idea for Latinas Create came to be. I had made the account a few years prior but didn’t really do anything with it. It just took me committing to the cause to grow my now 15K+ community over the past 3 years! My largest markets are LA, Chicago, and Texas which is no surprise given the optics of America—and I love that for us. We have community members from over 40 countries as well, and to be introduced to new creators on the daily is truly an honor. I want to the world to know that Latinas can and do work together and support each other. 1 in 4 new businesses in the U.S. alone is created by a Latina, and with 1 Trillion in purchasing power we aren’t going to stop the cycle of creation anytime soon!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite places are usually friends homes—so I’d undoubtedly say come to a gathering hosting by a friend! We’d likely visit any number of museums also because they make for the best photo-op backdrops—The Getty is always nice to check off. During we week we’d find any and everything artsy from farmers markets, to shows like from Pop-Up Magazine at the Theatre at Ace Hotel or a random spot from Sofar Sounds. As far as eats, we have to have a taco-truck tour and I don’t care if it’s basic we are going to Egg-Slut for breakfast sammies!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Jennifer Ramón, is the Multicultural Marketing Director at Warner Bros. She was pinnacle in connecting me to her team which enabled me to interview Latina celebrities from Rosario Dawson to the cast of In The Heights. She saw my potential and is a consistent encouragement to me.
