Meet Anastasya Poetri | Musical Artist, Singer, Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Anastasya Poetri and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anastasya, why did you pursue a creative career?
Music started of as a hobby for me, but I soon realized that this is what I wanted to do with my life. Everyday that I work on music, that I listen to music, that I experience music, I get a deeper appreciation for the art.

I also understand that my career choice to become a singer and a songwriter is not a common choice, especially where I am from (Jakarta, Indonesia). Hence why I am so grateful for my parents, who never hesitate to support me; breaking the norm and sending their first-born to a music school, supporting my work, constantly streaming my songs. I could not ask for a better support system. If it weren’t for my parents, I would not have pursue music.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an artist/singer-songwriter from Jakarta, Indonesia. I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2021 with a degree in Songwriting and Theory of Jazz and Popular Song minor.

My music is my stream of thoughts. Whatever I am feeling that day, I put it in a song. I publish it in hope that people can relate to it, so that they have a place they feel like they belong. I am proud of all the songs that I have released on digital music platforms. The response of every song that I have put out. makes me motivated to release more and more songs. I get really excited when I practice with a band, record in the studio, because I know that we are creating something amazing that will soon be shared for everyone to hear.

My musical influences play a big role in how I came up with my brand. I listen to a lot of 70s-80s classic rock, 2000s pop, and jazz growing up. People have described my songs as pop tunes with jazz undertones, and to be honest, I love it. That’s when I started to gravitate towards incorporating jazz progressions into my pop songs.

My journey to get to where I am today is not easy. I worry that the music I created is not good enough; that it’s not “complex enough” or “smart enough”. I waited one year to release my debut single “Afterthought”, because I thought it is not good enough. When I finally had enough courage to put it out, the turnout was amazing. Up until today, it is still my most streamed song on Spotify. With that in mind, I would say that the hardest challenge that I have to counter everyday is my thoughts. It is never as scary as I make it seem to be, because I am the only one capable of stopping myself from achieving anything.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am currently in Boston and I am a massive foodie! First, I would take them to Tatte for some breakfast. They have this amazing prosciutto and scrambled egg plate that I really love, and a big crunchy oatmeal raisin cookie I would get for a snack. Then I would drag them to spin at The Handle Bar, which is this local indoor cycling studio to get a good workout in before lunch! For lunch, I would take them to either Santouka Ramen or Yume Ga Arukara; they are the best ramen and udon place in the city! We would then stroll around the Charles River or do some shopping in Newbury. And for dinner, I would take them to the Q Restaurant in Chinatown. The Q is hands down the best hotpot in the city, and I always recommend it to everyone I meet. We would then go to Dillon’s or The Bebop for some drinks, and end the night at Lucky Strike for some arcade games and some bowling!

Some places that I think deserve a shoutout too is Caffe Vittoria in the North End, they have amazing cappuccinos and hot chocolate for a cold day. You can’t forget to eat seafood when you’re in town too, so I would most definitely recommend Neptune Oyster for their Cioppino and fresh Oysters, and Barking Crab for a messy seafood experience!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am dedicating my shoutout to my family. Their patience, love, and support has gotten me where I am today.

I would also like to give a shoutout to my Berklee professors, especially Rodney Alejandro and Cassandre McKinley for teaching me valuable lessons in the music industry, and taking time to mentor me as an artist/songwriter.
