We had the good fortune of connecting with Bobby Soto- Román and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bobby, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
i chose an artitic life because as a youngster it was the only thing that made sense to me. the space to share my heart and thoughts and ideas were heard and it felt empowering.

nothing else meant more than being part of a community where i mattered and where i could enhance parts of my self that were hidden. acting was the only way out for me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an actor. At first my to stay out of trouble my mom dropped me off to an acting class in hollywood, in Lisa Picotte and David Kauffman’s studio. I spent so much time there that i started to like the feeling of being invisible, to a degree, i was far away from my home town, i could be anyone in this space and share parts of myself i couldn’t and never though to express at home or in school, And that is the point about acting, to get dropped off onto some distant land, time, other reality and now its my job to use all my survival skills and adapt to survive in the unknown, It was a tough time, trying and trying to figure out something that i had no idea about, every day was a challenge to understand the world and politics of acting and the business it is. I am still learning about it everyday. it will never cease to teach me, humble me, introduce me to new people from around the world and to places I’ve only seen on magazines or movies. Everyday as an actor is to an ask on the human being to rediscover who they are and to contemplate why they are the way they are, so that when asked to give it to a character we can easily actress that well of life, its an odd thing to ask someone to hold onto the feeling of heartbreak because maybe one day you’d be asked to show that on screen. its a constant question if this is it, if this is the life i really want, and every battle within myself i come to a place where i, at my desk reading a new piece or writing a part of my mind and heart out, and yet again i am reminded why i do this. and again i persist.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Leo’s truck to have al pastor tacos con piña. To hang out, Echo Park Lake, to ride on the swans and have an elote by the best elotero in the city.
Then I’d find a Cinespia film event in the park.
Take a Kenpo karate class with Sensei Alexander Richard Mesquita at RMMA off Sunset Blvd. and Echo Park Ave.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I give credit to two things for the life i’ve created. The first credit i give is to South Central Los Angeles, the city i was raised in during the late nineties and early two-thousands, where artistic programs didn’t exist, but the hype over gangs and drug use was intense. This place gave me the strength and fire to follow through with all of my passions and dreams. The blessing within all of this was having my mom, where the most credit goes, who’s whole life was an act of survival, at a young age she had her will and determination to become something positive and to do something positive in life, and she did that. My mom taught me a very important lesson, ” remember son, a closed mouth won’t be fed!” Every time i forget the value of my voice , my mom is there to remind me my worth.
