We had the good fortune of connecting with Madonna Lazo-Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Madonna, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
I love this question so much! Because this is truly my mission and my calling. I’m an educator and a parent, and my purpose in life is to be an example to other parents and my child (and future children–I only have one right now) by taking the time to be mindful, purposeful, and grateful. These are values that I practice with my little one since day one, and also values I share with others as a professional. I think the most important thing I’ve done as a parent to impact my child thus far is to demonstrate a growth mindset, such as practicing gratitude and humility, always staying green and learning, always giving a 101% of effort in everything you do, creating the life you want and taking action.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business provides speech, language, and related services to help individuals who have communication needs. However, it doesn’t stop there. Making Learning Special aims to educate, support and empower families to maximize their love one’s overall communication development. Communication is a key factor that makes us social creatures, and it’s a huge part of our wellbeing, mental health, and creating relationships. My business aims to help build strong minds and strong relationships through meaningful connections. I’m excited to share that this is just the beginning for Making Learning Special! I aim to reach the masses by providing information and resources to parents and families in different settings, whether it be through social media, through gatherings, or through a safe and supportive space to learn and connect.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The support from my family and friends is huge. My parents and siblings My husband, Zach Smith, has always been my number one supporter, has been a mentor to me, was the one who encouraged me to start my own business in the first place, and continues to be a soundboard throughout my journey. I love the teachings of Joe Dispenza, Tom Bilyeu, Shawn Stevenson, Ed Mylett, Andy Fisella, a fellow speech-language pathologist Laura Mize, and so many other wonderful and inspiring individuals who have taught me so much.
