We had the good fortune of connecting with Damon Sharpe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Damon, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Work ethic. I always say work ethic trumps talent. You may not the be the smartest or the most talented but if you are driven and stay the course you will almost always achieve some level of success.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I went though a lot of ups and downs to get to where I am in in my career today. As a teenager I was catapulted to teen idol status as a member of the boy band Guys Next Door. We had a tv show on NBC and a record deal on SBK/EMI. We had dolls, a board game, t shirts, buttons and posters you name it. But as quickly as it was a success it was over. I literally went from taking pictures with Will Smith as a peer to a couple years later serving him a Pepsi as a waiter. It was a very humbling experience I am grateful for to this day. I was signed to many more failed record deals after that. Once I was fortunate enough to have a new chapter of success open up as a Producer and Writer I have not looked back. I’ve been able to work with some of the biggest artists in the world and it has afforded me a great life! I now make sure I balance and give back and mentor whenever I can. I am also in an amazing reinvention chapter as a DJ playing huge festivals like EDC Vegas and I have amassed over 80M streams on Spotify as an artist. I also just launched my own dance label Brainjack!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve traveled to some incredible places but LA is right up there! Some of my favorites are the Magic Castle a private club with amazing magicians who perform. Avra, Firefly, Santuari, Catch and Gracias Madre are a few of my favorite restaurants. LA has a ton of really cool areas. Downtown, Hollywood, The Valley, Korea Town and the beaches. So many cool lounges and clubs to check out as well. Academy, Avalon, The Dream Rooftop, Sound, Beauty & Essex just to name a few. It’s hard to run out of places to explore!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shout out Julie Renn! She was my dance teacher when I was a teenager and truly inspired my work ethic and creativity in a big way. She not only taught me the art of dance but instilled much of the musicology in me. She also taught me work ethic and drive. I was this teenage kid with glasses, a broken tooth, hair parted down the middle and she gave me a makeover that really transformed me from an introvert to an extrovert. It’s so important to boost peoples self-confidence and empower them to embrace all their qualities.
