We had the good fortune of connecting with Saul Benito Frausto and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Saul Benito, where are you from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am from a small town in Nayarit, Mexico called La Peñita de Jaltemba and I grew up watching my mom work in the beauty industry as a hairstylist. I said to myself, “If she is able to take care of me and my brother at this level, I can definitely scale it and make it bigger”. From there, I decided to attend beauty college but my mom discouraged me from going saying I would not make a good living or be successful. But I continued on and after beauty college, I came to the United States in February 1990 with no license to cut hair in the state of California. I passed the state board test and received my license on April 30, 1991. As a young man, I always believed I could succeed and have my own shop, and it’s been great since.

What should our readers know about your business?
Le Grand Salon is a place where you can come in when you are feeling down if you’re not liking your gray hair or the last haircut someone else did. Our clients come in and it’s a very welcoming place for them, you name it we have it. Respect for detail. Here we take care of our clients like family and enjoy every single moment with them.

We have been in the Arcade Building in San Pedro since 2009. When I first decided to leave my old location and start my own salon, it was not easy. I had been there for 15 years and wondered if my clients were going to follow me or the new location I was at, but thank God they did. It’s been the best career decision I ever made, 13 years and counting.

Always keep learning and be open to new things. Whether it’s a new tool or product, every day is an opportunity to learn. You have to be open to be successful.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It all depends, but I am a fan of my local town San Pedro. The USS Iowa Museum is one of the most beautiful and historic places we have in our local town. Not only United States history but world history, I recommend anyone visiting to experience the historic battleship. Cabrillo Beach provides you the best of both worlds, whether you’re looking to surf, spend time with family and friends, or enjoy a beautiful sunset as the waves come in, the marina has it all. Lastly, San Pedro Cafe is a staple here in town, they have great food and always treat me like family.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this to my mom, she always wanted to have her own place but never did. She was always working from her living room in our home. Her resiliency and commitment have inspired me to continue working and always provide my clients with the best service.
