24 hours in a day, 168 hours in a week. Junior investment bankers regularly work 80-90 hours a week. Many other high profile professions require the same level of commitment. Often those on the outside claim that working 80-90 hours a week is bad/wrong/terrible/silly/etc but we’ve spoken with so many folks who say working that much has been the best decision of their life – it allowed them to develop a deep and strong skill set far faster than would have been possible otherwise. In other words, by working 2x the hours, they were able to generate 5x or more the rewards. And depending on where you are in your career, investing heavily in your skills and competence can pay dividends for a long time.

Jason Lucero | Director, photographer, editor

My work life balance is constantly changing as new chapters open. Before I became a father, there was much more free time for balancing both work and life activities. Now as a dad, my priorities dictate that work life balance. At this point in my life, I mostly work on edits or film in the evening and am with my kid the whole day, while my fiancé works. A lot of trial and error has taught me that seeking out a healthy work/life balance is what made me able to refer to myself as an artist. I have been working in the creative arts industry since I was 14, starting as a Stage Manager for my local community theatre and from then on I never held a job that wasn’t creative in its nature. Having a team is what helps most with work life balance, you cant do it all on your own and you have to understand that. I can say that I try to make Sundays my day where I really disconnect, but honestly it typically happens on Saturdays. Read more>>

Like everyone else, my life changed significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically in my work-life balance. PiA | Plus Size Couture Fashion/ Costume Designer, Experimental Artist & Seeker of Opulence

This is such an important question! The way we think about balance is interesting. It doesn’t necessarily have to be 50/50. The creative balance is about listening to your muse and your body. I worked for the Fashion Industry for 10+ years and studied fashion for 6 years. The idea is essentially to keep working nonstop- you must always be producing at a large volume. Read more>>

elisa haggarty | Conscious Leadership Coach

A few years ago I stopped thinking about “work life” balance and adopted a “life-work” balance. In my twenties, I got really caught up in the “hustle” culture and too often confused my success in my career with my value. This led to a lot of burn out and imbalance with self worth. The richness of our life and the relationships/hobbies I invest in has a generative impact on the quality of work I do. Read more>>
