Meet Kelyn Fillmore | Wedding Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelyn Fillmore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelyn, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
The most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make would have to be quitting my stable, corporate job to pursue a career I had very little experience in. I worked in public accounting for a little over two years and when I decided to quit and pursue photography, I had never shot a wedding and had only done a handful of photoshoots. Although my job in accounting paid fairly well and was the safe option, I was extremely unhappy and didn’t think it was worth it to remain in that position. Taking the leap was frightening but it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a Wedding & Elopement photographer who loves working with couples to capture their authentic love story on camera. I encourage my clients to get lost in each other during our shoots so that I can capture all the sweet, candid moments, which create photos that you can feel. I’m very proud of myself for creating a business that continues to grow everyday and I’m excited to learn more and continue to improve my art. In this industry, imposter syndrome is very common and it can be hard not to compare your work to other photographers in the community. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that not everyone is going to jive with you or your work, but as long as you stay true to yourself and create the art that you want the world to see, you will attract the right kinds of clients.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visiting the area, some activities I would suggest would include a beach day at Broad Beach in Malibu, a night game at Dodger Stadium, maybe a concert at the Hollywood Bowl or the Greek Theater. There’s some awesome hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains and countless places to eat and drink, like Malibu Wines or Cafe on 27.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Jessica Woodard! I would consider her not only my mentor, but a very dear friend of mine. My best friends’ hired her to shoot their wedding and in the months before the wedding I reached out to her in hopes of receiving some career advice and possibly shadowing or assisting! Since June of 2021, I’ve shot at least 8 weddings with her and she’s taught me so much since then. She’s one of the kindest people I’ve ever met and I attribute a lot my success to her!
