We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Chaaban and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brian, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As even a child I knew I wanted to start my own business. Raised in a household with entrepreneurial parents, I saw the flexibility and freedom that owning a business for oneself brought and so throughout my early education and later college years I always kept that as a goal of mine. After college I began working for a leading luxury design showroom in West Hollywood and it was there that my inspiration for Chaaban Designs started. I was surrounded by beautiful design furniture and objects on a daily basis and thought to myself – “I can contribute to this community too – I can start my own collection.” It was then that the prototyping, sourcing, branding and eventual distribution of my company came together. As the sole operator of my luxury product company, the process has been steady but incredibly rewarding as I am able to control every aspect of my brand from creating product designs to strategizing marketing and sales outreach.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Chaaban Designs is a premium bronzewares and home furnishings company which takes inspiration from organic forms, allusions to brutalism, or nature in its softest and hardest forms. After years of primarily using the “lost wax-casting” method for developing bronze forms, my work is now expanding to brass, upholstery, marble, cast glass and lighting elements. The growth of materials reflects the growth of concept within the work I produce, encompassing more and more with each new piece. All designs are proudly produced in my hometown of Los Angeles, CA with a focus on quality and durability.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A few of my Los Angeles favorite spots would include the Getty Museum (Los Angeles Location), lunch at Lucky’s in Malibu and drinks at Soho House West Hollywood for some of the best views of the city. I also like to keep active with hikes – some of my favorites are Los Leones Canyon in the Pacific Palisades and Runyon Canyon in Hollywood is a must-visit for incredibly city views and an overall taste of LA.

I also love the Orange County area and recommend visiting Thousands Steps Beach in Laguna for crystal blue waters and clean beaches. Laguna also offers a thriving variety of fun art galleries to visit, casual beach eats and waterfront bars. Later in the evening I would recommend a Duffy boat ride around the Newport Beach bay which is just a short drive from Laguna.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to acknowledge the Jean de Merry showroom in Los Angeles for kick-starting my interest in the design community. I started working for this showroom in 2016 and it was their beautifully curated showroom that inspired me to design a collection of my own. I would also like to thank Una Malan for representing my collection in Los Angeles. She was the first of my showroom representations and I am grateful for her support.
