We had the good fortune of connecting with Jsmooth Aka Jay Gutierrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jsmooth Aka Jay, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
That’s a good question, an interesting one, I’m gonna try to briefly summarize a long answer to this one hehe. Well the truth is I did not know I was pursuing a creative career until I was actually pursuing it. I’ve been in love with dance since I first started to love music, and seek out and buy albums of artists when I was growing up in the 90s. I guess you can say I danced my way through all my teen years up until it was no longer something that just made me either happy or something that made me feel challenged but something that would take me all over the world and be able to make a living off of. For me I just never knew anything else, I fell in love with movement and it was almost like the more time and effort I put into it, the more happier I got at the feeling of reaching a higher potential, that and the fact of my creative outlet had challenges to keep me on my toes. These challenges were world championship competitions of course not at first. I needed to reach that level to get there but by the time I became a world champion I was just to deep to ever do anything else. Opportunities to travel and share knowledge, teach, judge, compete and it all happened so fast that there was really no room for any other career choice. There was a lot of thing that happened in between that jump started me into this position that I left out, but the short version of why did I pursue an artistic career is, I was too busy focused on feeling good and enjoying a journey that I had no idea what was on the other side, to ever turn back. 🙌🏽🙏🏽

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Oops I think I answered a lot of that in the first question.

Well I’ve always reached for higher chapters when it comes to dance and artistic expression.

I never had a set goal all I knew was I could never stop doing this, I was too busy enjoying developing my skills learning more about myself as well as being embedded in this culture and sharing with other amazing talents . I’ve always been fascinated with flow, with making my movement look like water which comes from a style Called Waving, it’s my first choice of dance and the first thing I fell in love with the source of my power you can say or my foundation. For 25 years it has never got the shine it deserved it was always just something people did a transition for another style of dance. I’m proud to say that with me pushing the style and creating inside of it and innovating the dance, finding likeminded specialist Wavers all over the world whom I created a super hero team with we finally changed that and have spearheaded the scene and brought attention to this style, creating events teaching workshops and basically being the face of the style as of now. That’s one thing in this moment I’m so very proud of because it’s new but it’s not really new it’s just getting the attention from the scene just now. I guess everything happens at the right time.

I would like the world to know and everyone out there who’s reading, you can truly do anything if you tunnel vision focus and never look back. It’s determination that will get you to where you wanna go, I am Living proof.
When I was 14 years old I did my final essay for my freshman year on my dreams of being a world champion dancer, I wrote about how I saw myself on that stage, flash forward 10 years later I made those words written on paper a reality. 🙌🏽

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
