Meet Leilani Christine | Makeup Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Leilani Christine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leilani, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
I grew up in San Bernardino, CA. It’s one of the most dangerous and poverty stricken cities in California. I have always strived to be an example to those in my community to follow their dreams and go after the impossible. I want those in my community to believe in themselves and aim higher no matter the circumstances or challenges they may face. Through art is how I found an escape from everything around me. It became a form of therapy for me. Being a makeup artist has always been more than applying makeup to enhance ones outer beauty. My goal has always been to make women feel beautiful from the inside out. When a client sits in my chair I want them to leave feeling like the most beautiful woman in the world. I want them to walk away feeling resilient, empowered, and confident. I hope to inspire and bring impact to those around me with my artistry and pave the way for young girls and women like me to dream big and reach for the stars.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a self taught makeup artist. I first fell in love with the art of makeup when I was 14. I would beg my mom to buy me makeup from the drugstore and lock myself in my room for hours out of the week to practice different looks on myself. I read and studied so many techniques, formulas, and top makeup artist in the world. My first job was at a makeup counter. I then moved on to becoming a brand representative for high end cosmetic companies. Once the pandemic hit, like many artist my career took a big hit. I was making zero income and had to work several dead end jobs to make ends meet. I gave up my career in the cosmetic field and told myself I wouldn’t return out of fear of things going south again. Shortly after the covid lift, my Dad passed from cancer. I locked myself in my room for hours and did my makeup as a form of therapy. It reminded me why I fell in love with the art of makeup in the first place. Through my art is how I am able to express myself when I can’t find the words. It brought me a feeling of joy in the midst of everything. Clients started reaching out to me and instead of giving up, I decided to give it a try again. Here I am I picking up where I left off. I had the opportunity to work as an artist for the 2022 Emmys, and am now a part time traveling makeup artist. I have met so many amazing women from all different walks of life who’s stories have impacted me and serve as a daily reminder to never give up on my dream and passion.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m still new to the area, but I love to explore! That’s one of my favorite hobbies outside of makeup. I’m adventurous so I try to eat at different spots everyday and find hidden gems in my spare time. I love coffee shops in downtown Pasadena. I frequent Coffee and Plants often. I love hiking Franklin Canyon Reservoir and Eaton Canyon. I also enjoy wine tasting at Malibu Wines & Beer Garden.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my mother Issa, and my sister Summer. They have always believed in me, always cheering me on, and continue to push me daily. I wouldn’t be half the woman I am today without their guidance, love, and support. I also want to dedicate this to my brother who lost his life to gun violence. And to my father who passed from Cancer this year. They were my best friends and my greatest role models. I honor them and carry them in my heart daily.
