Meet Mitchell Miller | Music Composer For Visual Media

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mitchell Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mitchell, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a creative career because it is what I wanted to do ever since I was introduced to music. I receive fulfillment and satisfaction from the work I do, and this is due to turning my passion into a career. Additionally, noticing the creative work of others while I was just starting my career inspired me to continue to learn, adapt, and dedicate myself further.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe that my work is unique, has a specific sound, and is easy to distinguish as being composed by myself. I’ve taken inspiration from many different genres, and put myself into work situations outside of my comfort zone so that I can learn from it, and apply what I learn to future projects. Soaking in as much information from others is paramount to me, as it helps me be a composer that is able to tackle a wide variety of projects.
The biggest challenge and obstacle as a composer is yourself, and I believe this can be said with many different creative fields as well. Opening myself up to other projects I would usually not consider, accepting criticism from others, and allowing myself to grow as a composer through collaboration and education has been a challenge that took a while to overcome. As a composer, you need to be able to learn from other creatives, and grow in your craft from that.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve been in Ventura for just about a year now, and am just now becoming more knowledgeable of the area. I usually take visiting friends to the Ventura Pier, where there is a pretty great restaurant there as well as beautiful views. Going closer to downtown Ventura, I usually take them to Koba Sushi, or the Ventura Theatre if there is something going on there. The biking trails around Ventura are beautiful, and sometimes will rent a bike for a visiting friend to go explore the bike trails.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I believe that Los Angeles College of Music, and specifically the Composing For Visual Media department there deserves a shoutout. The faculty there noticed my work before I attended for my Bachelor’s, as I was already composing music for commercials and TV shows before attending. They pushed me in other directions that I wouldn’t otherwise consider myself, and I grew as a composer due to that. I believe that LACM noticed my dedication to my craft early, and pushed me towards opportunities that I would otherwise not have.
