Meet Obiloh II Egu | Curator of the Arts

We had the good fortune of connecting with Obiloh II Egu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Obiloh II, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe you must take risk in order to achieve anything special, and lord knows I want to go down as someone who was special, a one of a kind individual. Because of this ambition it’s my understanding that I must take high risk, sometimes I reap the rewards and enjoy the fruits of my labor. Other times, I fall flat on my face and have to suffer the consequences of my risk taking action. Either way the dice rolls I am always happy when I bet on myself. Yes, at times its rough and my actions put me in unfortunate circumstances but I know every barrier is just a plot line that will make my story more interesting when I eventually achieve dreams and become who I always said I was. Long story short, risks are imperative in my life and I will continue taking them fearlessly.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At the time I am writing this it is December 13, 2022, in five days it’ll be three years since I have become a photographer. Being this close to my three year anniversary evokes many emotions and thoughts but right now what I am feeling most is the desire to improve. I know I am a good photographer and take good photos; however I want to be an artist who creates masterpieces.
I am most excited for the art that is to come, I am not just running my mouth when I tell people I am just getting started. I have so much to learn and even more to create. The art that is to come will be stunning. Trust.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout everyone who has inspired me at Howard and motivated me to push on. The community at Howard has helped me determine my future goals, I haven’t always been as obsessed with art and creating as am now, this passion is new. Being on campus and in the DMV these last one and a half years has sparked a light in me that has caught everyone off guard. The course of my future has changed because of my experiences here and I thank everyone who has played a role in that dearly. Special shoutout to my homegirl Soluna Martinez who has always supported, critiqued, and inspired me when it comes to art. Thank you Soluna. Another special shoutout to Jerry Benn and Noah Spruill who were my first models and whenever I need them to be in a shoot till this day show up and show out for me. I love all ya’ll. Thank you.
