We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Resendiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor for me would probably be learning. I like to consider myself a mixed media artist because I’m always curious to try new things and alter my way of thinking. In a way I’m paying homage to the artsy side of my family. My parents and aunties were always the type of people to DIY things, from making hand making dresses & party recuerdos to DIY tattooing each other & fixing broken anything. I feel like picking that up from a young age helped me feel confident that there isn’t anything I can’t learn to do. There’s always room for expansion.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I do all sorts of things, I like drawing, making jewelry, screen printing, organizing community events, the list goes on. I think what sets me apart from others is that I try not to take myself so seriously, part of what makes me me is that I genuinely like doing all of these activities, it never feels like work, but comes to me naturally. If you like what you do, you never have to work a day in your life. I’m most proud of these monthly art pop-ups I get to organize at this bar called Mission bar in Santa Ana. Its really given me an outlet to show off the things I hold dear to me especially my drawings. I’d like to continue to get better at drawing and pick up new mediums to work with.
Getting to where I am professionally definitely is a roller coaster, even the best of us have our good and bad days. Its not always easy, it’s a lot of paying your dues, being consistent & confident, all while at the same time trying to make it fun and not feel like work. It requires a lot of gentleness and patience with yourself and your progression. I want people to know that I am not a cool girl, I’m just Melissa. I’m a sensitive and gentle being and I want nothing more than to be able to be my authentic self and share that with others through my art. I love what I do and would like to continue to take it to the next level.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have a thing for speakeasies, clubs, & interactive experiences, for fun I’d visit, Mission bar Santa Ana, one of the coolest dive bars in all OC, Mission Control a local arcade (OC), the Vincent Van Gogh exhibit in LA, The Madcap hotel (LA), Blue Mondays LA for dancing, Totally 80’s bar (OC) and also the fashion district in LA for all your needs. For coffee a Woman owned coffee shop called Corazon coffee or White sparrow coffee (both in OC) . Some of my favorite food spots include Pearla (Mexican restaurant in Santa Ana), Hokkaido Ramen Satouka, Avila’s El Rancho and BCD tofu house.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Don’t mind me being corny, but I have to mention all these people & places because without them I wouldn’t be myself. I’d like to give a special shoutout to all my family & friends especially Amy, Isabel, and all my aunties for the endless amount of love and encouragement. I’d like to give a shoutout to Vanessa Pozzobon & Jessica Hurtando owners of Mission bar Santa Ana and Corazon coffee, they’ve really helped me connect with others and gave me a platform this year for not only myself, but other local southern california artists; because of them I host a monthly art pop up in my local community where artists from all over come and share their crafts. Please come support their businesses as they have helped so many others. Another shoutout for all the new people & artists I’ve got to connect with in the last few years.
